For a Vanilla Visa Gift Card, use your own name and address if checkout asks for a billing address. If it asks only for a ZIP code, use your own ZIP code. Vanilla says the card has no preset billing address and does not need to be registered for online shopping. Other issuers may handle this differently, so follow the instructions on your card or contact its issuer.
What address should you enter for a Vanilla Visa Gift Card?
Vanilla’s FAQ says there is no preset billing address for its Visa Gift Cards. Enter your own name and address when an online checkout requests one. If the checkout asks only for a ZIP code, enter your own ZIP code.

Vanilla also says its gift cards do not need to be registered for online shopping. These instructions apply to Vanilla cards; they should not be assumed to apply to every Visa gift card issuer.
Why does checkout ask for a billing address?
Merchants may use Address Verification Service (AVS) to compare the address information entered at checkout with information on file with the card issuer. Visa’s merchant guidance describes billing address as the address where a cardholder’s monthly statement is sent. That describes a merchant verification process; for a gift card, follow the issuer’s specific instructions rather than assuming the card has a registered statement address.

What to check if the purchase is declined
- Use the specific issuer’s directions. For Vanilla, enter your own name and address, or your ZIP code if that is all checkout requests. For another issuer, check the card’s website or call the number printed on the card.
- Check the available balance. Visa advises that the gift-card balance should cover the purchase. Its gift card instructions say online checkout uses the card number, expiration date, and CVV.
- Contact the issuer if it still fails. Visa directs cardholders with a declined transaction or card-specific question to the issuer. Use the phone number on the card or the contact details provided by its issuer; the exact reason for a decline depends on the card, merchant, and transaction.
These checkout instructions do not guarantee that every merchant accepts every Visa gift card online. Acceptance can vary by merchant and issuer.
