It was a single strawberry from Elly Amai, a Kyoto-based luxury-fruit purveyor, sold at Los Angeles grocery retailer Erewhon, according to ABC News. The $19 figure became the headline price, but The Washington Post later reported paying $20 for one at Erewhon’s Pasadena store and said it had initially been advertised for $19.
What exactly was the $19 strawberry?
It was one berry sold individually—not a smoothie or a package of ordinary strawberries. ABC News identified the reported supplier as Elly Amai, a luxury-fruit purveyor based in Kyoto, Japan. Food Network described the individual fruit as packaged beneath a plastic dome.
The reporting does not identify the strawberry’s exact cultivar or establish how it was grown. It therefore supports the product’s reported identity and retailer, but not claims that a particular growing method or variety explains its price.
Why did reports give two different prices?
ABC News reported a $19 price for the individual strawberry in February 2025. In March 2025, The Washington Post said it paid $20 at the Pasadena store and noted that the berry had first been advertised at $19. Those are attributed reports from different coverage; neither establishes a universal or current price.

ABC News also reported that Elly Amai typically offered a tray of 15 strawberries online for $90 at the time of its 2025 story. That historical offer is not a current price quote, and the available reporting does not provide matched information about berry size, shipping, or other costs. It is not enough to determine whether buying the tray would have been better value than buying one berry at Erewhon.
How did it become a viral food story?
Social-media attention gathered around a video review by Alyssa Antoci, whose enthusiastic reaction circulated widely, according to ABC News and Food Network. That response helps explain the berry’s visibility; it is a reviewer’s personal opinion, not proof of objectively superior taste.

The strawberry is also distinct from Erewhon’s strawberry-skin smoothie, a separate product covered by the Los Angeles Times in November 2025. The similar wording and high prices can make the two easy to confuse.

Whether one berry is worth the reported price depends on what a buyer values: a rare treat or social-media moment may appeal to some, while shoppers seeking everyday fruit may not find the price compelling. The reporting does not offer enough information about cultivar, weight, production costs, or a controlled taste comparison to settle the question as a matter of objective quality.
