The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Semrush is a paid digital-marketing intelligence platform best known for SEO research and monitoring. It helps businesses investigate keywords, competitors, backlinks, technical issues, content opportunities, paid-search activity, and—on newer plans—visibility in AI-generated search answers. It is a research and workflow system, not a button that guarantees rankings.
Semrush is one of the broadest established platforms in this category, but whether it is the right or “leading” tool depends on your goals, market, budget, and need for competitive data. Current buyers may encounter both the traditional SEO Toolkit and the broader Semrush One bundle, so plan names and limits matter.
What is Semrush used for?
Semrush organizes several SEO and marketing jobs in one account:
- Research: Find keyword ideas, search intent, SERP features, competitors, and content opportunities.
- Audit: Crawl a website for technical and on-page problems.
- Plan: Build keyword groups, content briefs, internal-link priorities, and link-prospect lists.
- Monitor: Track selected rankings, visibility, competitors, backlinks, site health, and AI-search presence.
- Report: Export data, schedule reports, connect Google Analytics 4 and Google Search Console, and support client workflows.
- Improve: Apply recommendations and content guidance while keeping human editorial and business judgment.
Its broader ecosystem also includes paid-search research, content marketing, local marketing, social media, traffic and market research, and AI-visibility tracking. Competitor traffic, rankings, advertising activity, and backlink figures are generally Semrush estimates or modeled metrics—not access to a rival’s private analytics account.
#1 Best Overall
Semrush’s Domain Overview documentation describes estimated organic and paid traffic, keyword rankings, backlinks, and AI-visibility measures. Treat those figures as directional evidence for decisions, then validate outcomes with your own first-party data.
How Semrush works
Projects and configuration
You create projects around a domain, subdomain, subfolder, or URL, then define countries, cities, devices, competitors, keywords, and reporting settings. These choices determine what a report means. A position-tracking campaign configured for mobile searches in London is not directly comparable with one configured for desktop searches across the United States.
Multiple data sources
Semrush combines its own search and backlink databases, crawlers, modeled estimates, and user-configured tracking campaigns. Its tools can show what appears to be happening in a market, but they cannot reproduce every search, click, backlink, or conversion on the web.
First-party integrations
Connect Google Search Console and Google Analytics where appropriate. Use Search Console for actual Google Search clicks and impressions, and Analytics for on-site behavior and conversions; use Semrush for competitive research, planning, monitoring, and workflow.
Main Semrush tools explained
Domain Overview
Domain Overview provides a starting view of a domain, subdomain, subfolder, or exact URL across organic search, paid search, backlinks, and AI visibility. Common fields include organic and paid keywords, estimated traffic, referring domains, backlinks, traffic share, Authority Score, country comparisons, and historical reports.
Authority Score is Semrush’s own metric, not a Google score or ranking factor. Historical data and some advanced reports are restricted to higher tiers. Semrush lists daily Domain Overview request limits of 10 without an SEO Toolkit, 3,000 on Pro, 5,000 on Guru, and 10,000 on Business. Use the overview to decide where to investigate; do not diagnose an entire business from one headline number.
Keyword Overview and Keyword Magic Tool
Keyword tools estimate search volume, difficulty, click potential, intent, SERP features, and related terms. Keyword Overview can show leading organic domains, advertisements, product-listing ads, and historical keyword information.
Rank #2
Use these tools to group topics by intent, compare organic and paid opportunities, and build a realistic content plan. Volume and difficulty are planning indicators, not promises of impressions, rankings, clicks, or sales. Inspect the live search results before assigning a term to a writer.
Keyword Gap
Keyword Gap compares your domain with competitors and identifies terms for which they rank and you do not. The useful question is not “How can we copy every missing keyword?” but “Which gaps match our products, authority, audience, and search intent?” A competitor may rank because of brand demand, links, a better product fit, or a page type you cannot reproduce. Avoid publishing thin pages solely to fill a report.
Position Tracking
Position Tracking monitors a selected set of organic or paid keywords and reports visibility, estimated traffic, average position, and competitor rankings. Its Visibility percentage uses click-through-rate assumptions for your tracked keywords and Google’s top 100 results.
Set these fields deliberately:
- Country, city, search engine, and database
- Desktop or mobile device
- Domain, subdomain, subfolder, or URL scope
- Tracked keywords and competitors
- Tags and landing-page mapping
- Update frequency and report schedule
A campaign can appear to improve or decline simply because its location, device, keyword mix, or SERP-feature settings changed.
Site Audit
Site Audit is a crawler-based diagnostic tool. It can identify crawlability and indexability problems, broken links, duplicate or missing metadata, HTTPS issues, and other warnings. A warning is not automatically a ranking factor, and fixing every item does not guarantee a ranking increase.

Treat duplicate titles, JavaScript-related findings, staging-site warnings, and low-priority recommendations in context. Semrush lists monthly crawl allowances of 100,000 pages on Pro, 300,000 on Guru, and 1,000,000 on Business.
Backlink Analytics and Backlink Audit
Backlink Analytics researches links pointing to any domain, including competitors. Backlink Audit reviews and classifies links to your own site and supports profile monitoring.
Rank #3
Third-party backlink indexes are incomplete. A missing link may still exist, and a large link count does not prove editorial quality, relevance, authority, or referral value. Evaluate the linking page, context, audience, and business relevance rather than pursuing volume.
Content tools
Semrush’s content tools support topic discovery, SEO briefs, draft generation, optimization, and content audits. They can speed research and editorial workflows, but AI-generated or optimized text still needs original research, subject-matter review, fact checking, brand and legal review, search-intent validation, and human usefulness testing.

Competitor and advertising research
Semrush can surface estimated paid keywords, ad copy, ad history, landing pages, and paid competitors. This helps identify commercial language, offers, seasonal campaigns, product categories, and landing-page patterns. Estimated ad traffic or spend is not audited financial or analytics data.
Reporting, integrations, and API
Exports, scheduled reports, Google Analytics 4 and Search Console integrations, and—on higher tiers—API access support agencies and larger teams. Combine competitive estimates with first-party clicks, impressions, sessions, leads, sales, and revenue instead of replacing your analytics stack.
Semrush versus Google Search Console and Analytics
| Question | Semrush | Google Search Console |
|---|---|---|
| Analyze competitors? | Yes, through modeled competitive datasets | No competitor intelligence |
| Actual Google clicks and impressions for your site? | No; it estimates market and traffic data | Yes, for a verified property |
| Technical diagnosis? | Yes, through its crawler | Indexing, crawl, security, and experience reports |
| User-defined keyword tracking? | Yes, with location and device controls | Reports actual queries shown for the site |
| Cost? | Paid plans, with limited access or trials | Free |
| Best role | Planning, competitive research, monitoring, and workflow | First-party Google performance and indexing diagnosis |
Google Search Console reports clicks, impressions, CTR, average position, queries, pages, countries, devices, and search appearances. Google describes Search Console as the source of truth for Google Search performance and Analytics as the source of truth for on-site behavior: official comparison. Google announced generative-AI performance reporting in June 2026, initially rolling it out to a subset of sites, so Semrush’s AI-visibility estimates should not be confused with Google’s own reporting: Google announcement.
How to use Semrush for a practical SEO campaign
- Connect first-party data. Verify the site in Search Console and connect Analytics where useful. Establish clicks, impressions, sessions, conversions, and revenue as the baseline.
- Create a correctly scoped project. Choose the domain, subdomains or subfolders, country, city, device, database, and relevant competitors.
- Save a baseline. Record organic traffic, conversions, rankings, top pages, indexed-page issues, and backlink profile.
- Research demand. Start with customer language, expand keyword variations, group by intent, and inspect the live SERP.
- Analyze competitors. Compare domains and subfolders, then determine whether apparent advantages come from brand demand, links, content, product fit, or technical performance.
- Audit fundamentals. Fix high-impact crawl, indexability, security, and template problems before minor warnings.
- Track a focused set. Include money terms, strategic topics, brand terms, local queries, and important page targets; exclude irrelevant volume.
- Turn findings into work. Improve or create pages, strengthen internal links, resolve blockers, improve useful metadata and page experience, and earn relevant editorial links.
- Measure business outcomes. Compare rankings with qualified traffic, leads, sales, revenue, and customer quality.

Semrush One maps Starter, Pro+, and Advanced to the SEO limits of Pro, Guru, and Business while adding AI-visibility capabilities such as prompt tracking and AI-generated-answer reporting. It is not merely a renamed SEO Toolkit. Read the comparison and live pricing page before paying more for features you may not use.
Costs beyond the headline plan
Team seats, report add-ons, lead-generation features, API requirements, and other toolkit costs can raise an agency or multi-person team’s total. Choose by actual websites, keyword volume, crawl size, historical-data needs, reporting workflow, and AI-visibility requirements—not by feature count alone.

Beginner or personal site
Start with free Search Console and Analytics if you mainly need actual performance, indexing checks, and conversion data. A paid platform is difficult to justify until you have recurring decisions that competitive research or monitoring will improve.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Local small business
Semrush can earn its cost when local competitors, multiple locations, content planning, and regular tracking are central to customer acquisition. Validate coverage for your city, language, and industry before committing.
E-commerce brand
Keyword, competitor, paid-search, content, technical, and backlink workflows can make the platform useful. Measure product-category traffic and revenue, not rankings alone.
In-house marketing team
Semrush suits teams that need repeatable research, audits, reporting, and cross-channel planning. Assign ownership so the account produces decisions rather than unused dashboards.
Agency
Multiple projects, scheduled reports, location controls, and exports can justify higher tiers. Budget for additional users and reporting requirements.

Enterprise organization
Check crawl scale, historical data, API access, governance, market coverage, and integration needs. The highest tier is worthwhile only when the organization can operationalize the data.
Paid-search-heavy advertiser
Advertising research can reveal language, offers, landing pages, and seasonal patterns, but estimated competitor activity should inform hypotheses—not financial forecasts.
AI-search monitoring
Semrush One is relevant when prompt tracking and AI-answer visibility are strategic requirements. AI mentions or citations are not equivalent to visits, leads, or revenue.
Semrush alternatives
Ahrefs
Ahrefs is a strong direct alternative for buyers focused mainly on backlinks, content research, rank tracking, site auditing, and SEO data. Its observed prices were £99 monthly for Lite, £199 for Standard, £359 for Advanced, and £1,199 for Enterprise with an annual commitment. Plan features and AI-prompt tracking vary. Semrush generally presents a broader digital-marketing suite; Ahrefs is a more SEO-centered candidate. Neither is universally best without testing your markets and workflows. See its FAQ for access details.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGoogle Search Console and Analytics
Search Console is the essential free complement for first-party Google Search data, indexing, crawl, security, and Core Web Vitals. Analytics explains behavior and conversions after arrival. They do not replace competitor keyword research, advertising analysis, broad backlink discovery, or cross-market benchmarking.
Other specialist platforms
Moz Pro, SE Ranking, and specialist rank-tracking or backlink products may fit better when you need one category, a lower cost, or a different interface. Compare database coverage, tracking controls, audit depth, reporting, seats, integrations, and total price using the same criteria.
What Semrush cannot do
- Guarantee rankings, traffic, leads, or revenue.
- Reveal a competitor’s private Analytics or Search Console data.
- Crawl the entire web or detect every backlink perfectly.
- Replace technical expertise, editorial judgment, or conversion analytics.
- Determine which recommendation has the highest return without business context.
- Prove that one change caused a ranking movement.
- Make Google index a page merely because an audit warning was fixed.
Pros and cons
| Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|
| Broad SEO, paid-search, content, reporting, and AI-visibility coverage | Expensive for casual users |
| Strong competitive-research orientation | Usage limits can become restrictive |
| Country, city, device, and competitor segmentation | Many figures are estimated and database-dependent |
| Agency-friendly projects and reporting | Learning curve and extra-seat costs |
| One workflow for research through monitoring | Does not replace first-party analytics |
Bottom line
Semrush is worth considering when a business repeatedly needs competitive SEO and paid-search research, technical audits, rank tracking, backlink analysis, content planning, and reporting in one system. It is less compelling for a small site that only needs actual Google performance data or occasional keyword ideas; Search Console and Analytics may be enough.
Choose the SEO Toolkit when traditional SEO capacity matches your needs. Choose Semrush One only when its added AI-visibility monitoring and broader capabilities justify the higher price. Compare Ahrefs or a specialist tool when an SEO-focused workflow, different database, or lower total cost matters more. In every case, test your real countries, languages, competitors, keyword sets, and reporting process before treating a subscription as a business investment.
