What Is Norbert’s Gambit? How It Works, Costs, and Risks

Norbert’s Gambit uses CAD- and USD-listed ETF units to convert currencies through a brokerage journal. Here’s how the process works and what it may cost.

Norbert’s Gambit is a way for Canadian investors to convert CAD to USD—or USD to CAD—by buying an exchange-traded fund listed in both currencies, asking a brokerage to journal the units from one listing to the other, and then selling them. It can reduce the effect of a percentage-based currency-conversion charge, but it is not free or instantaneous: trade commissions, the ETF’s bid-ask spread, a possible journaling fee, processing time, and exchange-rate movement all affect the result.

What is Norbert’s Gambit?

The method uses two currency listings of the same security. The commonly used pair is DLR and DLR.U, listings of Global X’s US Dollar Currency ETF. Global X describes DLR.U as its U.S.-dollar listing and says the fund seeks to reflect the U.S. dollar’s reference value through primarily U.S.-dollar cash and cash equivalents, net of expenses. The issuer also describes transferring DLR units into DLR.U to transact in U.S. dollars. Global X’s DLR.U product page

A broker’s journaling process moves units between the CAD and USD listings. Instead of asking the brokerage to exchange cash directly, you buy the ETF in one currency, have the units journaled to the other listing, and sell them. The sale proceeds are then in the currency of that listing.

How do I convert CAD to USD with Norbert’s Gambit?

  1. Buy DLR using CAD. Use an eligible brokerage account with CAD available to trade.
  2. Request a journal from DLR to DLR.U. Wait until your brokerage shows the units on the USD side and available to trade.
  3. Sell DLR.U. The sale proceeds are in USD.

Do not sell before the journal is complete. Confirm the ticker, account side, and availability to trade in your brokerage account first; process details differ between brokers. Global X’s description of the listings and transfer is available on its product page.

Can I use Norbert’s Gambit to convert USD to CAD?

Yes. Reverse the order: buy DLR.U with USD, request a journal from DLR.U to DLR, then sell DLR for CAD. While waiting to sell DLR, you hold the CAD-listed units, so their CAD value can move with the USD/CAD exchange rate. That movement can change the amount you ultimately receive. How much does Norbert’s Gambit cost?

There is no single universal cost or break-even amount. Compare the method with your brokerage’s current all-in conversion alternative for the actual amount you plan to exchange. Potential costs include:

  • Commission for buying and selling the ETF, if your broker charges one.
  • A journaling fee, plus applicable tax.
  • The bid-ask spread on the ETF when you buy and sell.
  • Any applicable account fees and the effect of exchange-rate movement while you wait.

For example, Wealthsimple’s Help Centre says its journal request costs CAD $9.95 plus tax per request. It also warns that the ETF spread still applies and the exchange rate can change during processing. Those terms are Wealthsimple-specific, not a general price for the strategy. The ETF itself also has fund-level expenses, which are distinct from brokerage trading and journaling costs. Global X reports a 0.55% management expense ratio as of 30 June 2026 and a 0.45% management fee plus applicable tax. These figures describe the fund, not a fee charged for each gambit request; check the issuer’s current product information for updated details. Global X’s DLR.U product page

To estimate your result, add the trade commissions, journal charge and tax, expected spread, and any relevant account fee. Then compare that total with the conversion cost offered by your broker or another service. A lower apparent fee is not necessarily a better outcome if the spread or exchange rate moves against you.

How long does Norbert’s Gambit take?

It depends on the brokerage, trade settlement, processing, and holidays. Wealthsimple estimates approximately two business days for its journal request, says holidays may extend the wait, and notes that units cannot be traded while a journal is pending. That estimate is specific to Wealthsimple and is not a guarantee. Wealthsimple’s process and timing details

A broader secondary guide describes the full workflow as commonly taking three to five business days, but actual timing can differ by broker and circumstances. Canadian-market settlement changed to T+1 on 27 May 2024, according to that guide’s reporting; settlement is only one part of the total wait. Do not treat the estimate as a promised completion date. Is Norbert’s Gambit worth it for a small amount?

It may not be. Fixed costs such as commissions and a journal fee take a larger share of a small conversion, while a standard broker conversion may be quicker. For a larger amount, avoiding a percentage-based markup may matter more—but only if the total trading, journaling, spread, and waiting costs are lower. Calculate both options for your own amount and account rather than relying on a universal threshold.

Can I do Norbert’s Gambit in my brokerage account?

Only if your brokerage supports the security and the required journal between currency listings for your account. Before buying, confirm the broker’s current rules for account eligibility, USD balances, journal requests, charges, interface, and processing time.

Wealthsimple provides one specific example: it requires an active USD account and a CAD cash balance for the fee; journal requests must be made through its web interface, and the feature is not currently available in its mobile app. Its fee and estimated processing time are described above. These requirements should not be assumed to apply at other brokerages. Wealthsimple’s account and interface requirements

What are the tax and recordkeeping considerations?

Do not assume that journaling or the complete gambit is tax-free. A secondary guide notes that the buy and sale in a non-registered account are dispositions and recommends keeping records of adjusted cost base and any gain or loss. Tax treatment can depend on the account and your circumstances; check current Canada Revenue Agency guidance or consult a qualified tax professional.
