Helium is a community-built wireless network with two distinct services: a LoRaWAN network for Internet of Things (IoT) devices and a Wi-Fi network that supports mobile-carrier offload. Community-operated radio equipment called Hotspots provides coverage. HNT is the network’s native token; network-use fees are paid in Data Credits (DC), which are created by burning HNT.
What is Helium?
Helium is a decentralized wireless infrastructure project whose community operators deploy radio equipment, or Hotspots, to provide coverage. Its two networks serve different purposes and use different radio technologies: LoRaWAN carries messages from compatible IoT devices, while Wi-Fi Hotspots can connect subscribers of participating mobile providers where coverage and provider arrangements are in place.
That distinction matters: Helium Mobile is a Wi-Fi carrier-offload service, not a claim that Helium replaces nationwide cellular radio coverage. The availability of a connection depends on the location, radio deployment, and participating provider.
How does the Helium network work?
| Feature | Helium IoT | Helium Mobile |
|---|---|---|
| Radio and use | LoRaWAN messages from IoT devices | Wi-Fi carrier offload for mobile subscribers |
| Main equipment | LoRaWAN Hotspots, also called gateways | Helium Mobile Hotspots or converted Passpoint-enabled Wi-Fi networks |
| Traffic path | Device → Hotspot → Helium Packet Router → configured LoRaWAN Network Server | Subscriber device → Wi-Fi Hotspot → internet through local breakout |
| Reward basis described in Helium documentation | Data transfer through Hotspots | Eligible data transfer, subject to radio readiness and service quality |
| Intended users | IoT device operators and application developers | Subscribers of participating providers and Wi-Fi network deployers |
IoT: LoRaWAN messages reach a network server
A LoRaWAN sensor or other end device sends a wireless message to one or more nearby gateways. A participating gateway acts as a Helium Hotspot and forwards the packet to the Helium Packet Router (HPR). HPR selects the appropriate LoRaWAN Network Server according to configured routes; the Hotspot does not decide how the application message is routed.

Helium describes this arrangement as permissionless: Hotspot operators and LoRaWAN Network Server operators can be different parties. HPR can identify which Hotspots forwarded a device message so they can be credited for eligible data-transfer rewards. Helium’s LoRaWAN architecture documentation describes this traffic flow.
Mobile: Wi-Fi connects participating subscribers
Helium Mobile is a Wi-Fi carrier-offload network. Helium Mobile Hotspots and converted Passpoint-enabled Wi-Fi networks connect to a common core. A participating mobile provider provisions a Passpoint profile for its subscribers, allowing compatible devices to connect automatically when they enter a covered radio’s range.

Passpoint handles device access. RadSec provides a secured RADIUS connection for authentication and usage accounting. With local breakout, traffic travels from the phone through the Hotspot to the internet rather than through the provider or Helium core. Rewards depend on eligible data transfer; radio readiness and quality of service affect eligibility. Coverage and provider participation are not universal. See Helium’s Mobile network documentation for its network design.
What is HNT, and how do Data Credits work?
HNT is Helium’s native cryptocurrency and protocol token. Helium says Hotspot hosts and network operators can be rewarded in HNT for deploying and maintaining coverage. Users pay fees for wireless data transmissions with Data Credits, which are USD-pegged utility tokens. The documented mechanism is burn-and-mint: HNT is burned to create DC. Data Credits are for network fees rather than a substitute name for HNT.

Helium’s token documentation says HNT was first issued on July 29, 2019, and that the network migrated from its own purpose-built blockchain to Solana on April 18, 2023. It describes a two-year halving schedule and a maximum-supply framework. These schedule details are not a live circulating-supply figure or an investment forecast.
Emission and onboarding figures in Helium documentation
The following are documentation figures, not current market prices or estimates of operator earnings. The pages are undated and were accessed October 4, 2026; operational costs and schedules can change.

| Figure | What Helium documentation says |
|---|---|
| 5,000,000 HNT per month | Targeted monthly distribution at launch. |
| About 223,000,000 HNT | Helium says HIP-20 initially targeted a 240,000,000 HNT maximum supply, but issuance by HIP-20 approval was about 17,000,000 HNT below schedule, reducing the maximum at that point to about 223,000,000 HNT. |
| 7,500,000 HNT | Target emissions listed for the year beginning August 1, 2026. |
| 100,000 DC ($1) | Listed onboarding total for an IoT Hotspot: 50,000 DC to add it and 50,000 DC to assert its location. |
These figures come from Helium’s HNT token documentation and its IoT Hotspot onboarding documentation. Check the current documentation before making deployment decisions.

No. Helium’s Oracle Data documentation says, “Proof of Coverage has been removed from the Helium networks as of July 6, 2026.” It treats Proof of Coverage data types as deprecated and retained as historical reference. Older descriptions of active beaconing and witnessing should not be taken as current reward rules. See Helium’s Oracle Data documentation.

What equipment can join Helium?
For the IoT network, Helium’s onboarding guidance says a LoRaWAN gateway can join as a Hotspot and lists setup documentation for equipment including Dragino LPS8/DLOS8, RAKwireless concentrators, and Seeed Studio SenseCAP M2. A category-level description—LoRaWAN gateway for Helium—is more reliable than assuming a particular model is currently compatible in every region. Confirm the supported regional radio band and current setup requirements in the Hotspot onboarding documentation.
Mobile Hotspots are a separate equipment category for Wi-Fi carrier offload. Their role is not interchangeable with a LoRaWAN gateway; the two networks carry different kinds of traffic.
What Helium means for a personal-finance reader
HNT connects network incentives to the cost of using Helium: eligible operators may receive HNT, while users pay network fees in DC generated by burning HNT. That describes the protocol’s utility and incentive design; it does not establish an HNT market price, a predictable return for Hotspot operators, or the amount of coverage or service available to a particular user. The figures above are documentation schedule and onboarding values, not a profitability calculation.
