It is Meta’s payment and checkout layer for eligible transactions on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp in some markets, and participating third-party stores. You can save an eligible card or another supported payment method, then reuse it for supported purchases, donations, in-app payments, Marketplace transactions and, in certain countries, person-to-person transfers.
Meta Pay is closer to a digital wallet and checkout service than to a bank account. It does not create a universal balance, work at every merchant or automatically make every payment feature available in every country. Your app, account, location, currency, payment method and the particular transaction all matter.
Facebook Pay and Meta Pay are the same service
Meta introduced Facebook Pay in 2019 as a way to make payments more consistent across Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and planned WhatsApp experiences (Meta’s launch announcement). In 2022, the company began changing the name to Meta Pay. Existing account details, payment methods and settings carried over during the transition, rather than requiring users to create a wholly new wallet (Meta’s Meta Pay announcement).
Older instructions may still say “Facebook Pay.” Current settings and help pages generally use “Meta Pay.” It is separate from Meta advertising billing, PayPal, Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, a checking account and a cryptocurrency wallet.

What Meta Pay can be used for
Meta lists several uses, but each is subject to country, account, app, merchant and payment-method restrictions (Meta Pay overview; where Meta Pay can be used).
- Purchases on Facebook and supported Instagram shopping flows.
- Buying and selling in selected Marketplace and Groups transactions.
- Donations to charities and personal fundraisers.
- In-app game purchases and some event-ticket purchases.
- Checkout at participating online stores.
- Sending or receiving money in supported Messenger conversations.
- WhatsApp payments in selected markets, including market-specific features in Brazil.
Seeing Meta Pay in your settings does not mean all of these functions are enabled. For example, an account may be able to check out on Instagram but not send money in Messenger.
Where is Meta Pay available?
Meta Pay operates in selected countries, but there is no permanent worldwide feature matrix. Meta said the name transition would roll out across nearly 200 countries; that described the rollout footprint, not identical functionality everywhere (Meta’s rollout announcement).

U.S. Messenger transfer rules
According to Meta’s current Help Center guidance, person-to-person Messenger payments are mobile-only in the United States. Sender and recipient must both live in the United States (Wisconsin is excluded), be at least 18, have active Facebook accounts, use U.S. dollars as the preferred currency and link an accepted payment method. Group chats are not supported. Meta says the Wisconsin restriction began December 16, 2024 (eligibility requirements).
WhatsApp payments are similarly market-specific. Meta’s Brazil help material includes an ombudsman route for unresolved family-and-friends transfer issues, which is not evidence of a global WhatsApp payments service (Brazil support information).
How Meta Pay works
1. Add an eligible payment method
Open the relevant Facebook, Instagram or Messenger settings, find Meta Pay or Payments, and add an option shown for your account. Depending on location and context, this may include a major credit card, debit card, PayPal or another supported method. Meta says payment methods and rollout can differ by user (payment-method guidance).
2. Start a supported transaction
Choose the product, donation, game purchase, ticket or transfer. At checkout or in the supported conversation, select Meta Pay or the stored method displayed by the app.

3. Confirm and authenticate
Check the amount, recipient or merchant, then complete any requested security verification. Meta may offer a payment PIN or device face or fingerprint authentication where available.
4. The underlying provider authorizes the payment
Meta presents and manages the payment flow, but the card network, bank, PayPal or another provider actually authorizes the charge. A participating store may use Meta Pay as accelerated checkout without Meta being the seller, shipper or party responsible for every refund or product dispute.
5. Review the result
Payment history and payment-method controls may appear in Facebook settings, Accounts Center or a payment-specific menu, depending on your product and account. Exact labels can change (Meta payment controls).
How to set up Meta Pay
- Open Facebook, Instagram or Messenger on the device where you intend to pay.
- Open Settings and look for Meta Pay, Payments or the payment section in Accounts Center.
- Select Add payment method and choose from the methods offered for your country and account.
- Enter the requested details and complete verification if prompted.
- Return to the supported purchase, donation or transfer and select the saved method.
Menu names and the available methods can vary by app, country, account and staged rollout. If Meta Pay is absent, that can mean the feature is not enabled for your account rather than that your card is defective.

Is Meta Pay safe?
Meta says it encrypts and securely stores payment-card numbers, uses anti-fraud monitoring and can notify users about suspected unauthorized activity. It also describes PIN and device-biometric protections where available (Meta’s security description). Those are company-stated controls, not an independent certification or a guarantee that every transaction is risk-free.
Separate four questions before assuming you are protected:
- Payment-data protection: how Meta stores and protects card details.
- Account security: whether someone can access your Facebook or Instagram account.
- Transaction protection: whether a purchase is refundable or covered by a particular buyer-protection policy.
- Merchant responsibility: who handles shipping, cancellation, product quality and disputes.
Use a unique Meta password, enable two-factor authentication, turn on a PIN or device authentication when offered, review payment history and remove old methods. Never give a password, one-time code or full payment details to someone claiming to be Meta support. For an unauthorized charge, contact your bank or card issuer promptly and report the transaction through official Meta support.

- The feature or transaction type is not supported in your country.
- Your age, account status or the other party’s eligibility does not meet the rules.
- The method, currency, merchant or chat type is unsupported.
- You are attempting a mobile-only Messenger feature from desktop.
- Your card is expired, has an incorrect billing address or was blocked by the issuer.
- Your bank, PayPal or another provider declined the authorization.
- Meta detected unusual activity or believes the account was accessed without permission and disabled payments (account payment restrictions).
- The app or account is in a staged rollout with different settings.
Practical troubleshooting order
- Confirm that the exact feature is supported where you and, for a transfer, the recipient live.
- Check age, account, currency and mobile-device requirements.
- Verify the card’s expiry date, billing address, available funds and any issuer fraud block.
- Try another payment method offered in Meta Pay.
- Update the relevant Meta app and retry.
- Check whether payments have been disabled on the account.
- Contact the bank, card issuer or PayPal when the decline appears provider-side.
- Use Meta’s official Help Center or in-app support for an unresolved transaction. If it was unauthorized, contact the financial institution immediately.
Meta’s Messenger guidance specifically lists an ineligible friend, a non-U.S. location, missing payment methods and a declined payment as possible causes (Messenger payment troubleshooting).
Does Meta Pay charge a fee?
Do not assume every Meta Pay transaction is free. A consumer may not see a separate Meta Pay fee for an ordinary supported purchase, but a card issuer, bank, PayPal, currency-conversion provider, merchant or other processor may charge. Transfer, business, donation, refund and cross-border costs can also differ. Product price, shipping and taxes are separate from the Meta Pay brand. Check the applicable transaction terms and Meta’s location-dependent Messenger fee guidance (Messenger transfer fees).
Meta Pay compared with other wallets

Another wallet may suit you better if you need a standalone balance, cash-out options, broad peer-to-peer availability, device tap-to-pay or a specific dispute process. Meta Pay is most convenient when you already transact inside a supported Meta app or store.
Bottom line
Facebook Pay is the former name for Meta Pay, a payment-method and checkout layer—not a bank account or universal money-transfer network. Add an eligible method in your payment settings, use it only where the specific app, merchant and country support the transaction, and treat security, fees, refunds and availability as separate questions.
