A reverse French manicure places its contrasting curve at the base of the nail, beside the cuticle. A classic French manicure puts its contrasting accent at the free edge, or tip. The shape may be called a reverse moon or, in some guides, a cuff nail; colors and finishes are flexible.
What makes a manicure “reverse French”?
The defining feature is placement: the accent follows a curve near the cuticle rather than outlining the tip. A CBSE Beauty and Wellness curriculum describes a traditional French manicure as a pale pink nail with a clear white outline at the tip, then describes the reverse as painting the nail bed white instead of the tips and leaving the rest a transparent, likely neutral shade. That is one conventional version, not a requirement for every modern design.
In tutorials, the curved accent is also called a reverse moon. Treatwell uses “cuff nails” for the cuticle-side design. The accent might be a solid color, glitter, or other nail art.
Reverse French vs. classic French
| Feature | Reverse French | Classic French |
|---|---|---|
| Accent placement | Curved accent at the base, beside the cuticle | Contrasting edge at the free tip |
| Common shape | A semicircle or curved “cuff” | An outline or band following the nail tip |
| Color and finish | Can be neutral, bold, glittery, or decorated | Often associated with a white tip and pale pink base, though designs vary |
The placement—not a required color—is what distinguishes the two. A design with accents at both the base and tip may be described as double-cuffed. A negative-space version can leave the base bare and make that area part of the design; Marie Claire describes this as combining reverse and outlined or negative-space approaches.

How to choose a reverse French variation
- Color contrast: Choose a subtle accent close to the base shade for a restrained look, or a bolder contrasting color for a more graphic effect.
- Finish: Keep the curve plain, or use glitter or other nail art.
- Coverage: Fill in the curved accent, or use negative space so the natural nail remains visible near the cuticle.
- Placement: Use an accent at the base alone, or pair it with a tip accent for a double-cuffed effect.
The look can also be more experimental than a simple neutral base and single curve. At Halpern’s Spring/Summer 2020 show, nail artist Marian Newman created a “reverse French talon,” moving the accent to the nail base while leaving pointed ends clear. Vogue quoted Newman describing its colors as “clashing, but not matching”; that refers to the runway design, not a rule for the manicure.
How to do a reverse French manicure at home
Regular polish
- Start with clean, dry nails and apply base coat.
- Apply two coats of a base shade and let them dry.
- With a fine nail-art brush, draw a semicircle on the lower nail bed, directly beside the cuticle.
- If desired, add a second color next to the first accent.
- Seal the design with clear top coat.
ANNY’s tutorial demonstrates this method with particular shades; the colors are examples, not required choices. A fine brush is useful for drawing the curve, but the look can also be requested at a salon.

Gel polish
OPI’s GelColor tutorial uses a detail brush to paint a reverse moon beside the cuticle, with its own GelColor products and LED lamp. It specifies 30-second LED cures for steps in that system. Those timings are OPI-specific: follow the curing instructions for the gel products and lamp you use rather than treating that duration as universal.

Ask for a “reverse French” or a “cuticle-side French accent,” and show a reference photo to clarify the curve, colors, finish, and coverage you want. The terms reflect the design’s commonly described placement; a photo helps communicate the specific version you have in mind.
