A crypto airdrop is a distribution of cryptocurrency tokens to selected blockchain wallet addresses, usually without a purchase payment. Projects use airdrops to attract users, reward activity, promote an application, or spread token ownership. “Free” describes the distribution price—not necessarily gas fees, tax, legal obligations, or risk.
Why crypto projects distribute airdrops
An airdrop can help a project:
- Raise awareness and encourage adoption.
- Reward early users or people who used a protocol before its token launched.
- Promote an application, network, or community.
- Broaden token ownership and support decentralization.
The term describes how tokens are distributed, not whether the project is legitimate, profitable, or legally exempt from securities rules.
How airdrop eligibility is determined
There is no universal eligibility test. The project’s official announcement and claim page determine the qualifying activity, snapshot date, blockchain, token contract, exclusions, and claim deadline.
| Eligibility basis | What it can mean | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Wallet snapshot | Your wallet held a specified asset at a stated time. | The exact snapshot date, chain, minimum balance, and excluded addresses. |
| Protocol activity | You used an application or network before a cutoff. | Which transactions count and whether activity on another chain is included. |
| Trading-platform use | You met a platform’s holding or usage condition. | Whether the platform credits the token and what account restrictions apply. |
| Community participation | You met a stated participation or contribution requirement. | The official records used to determine eligibility. |
| Referrals or promotional tasks | You completed specified promotional actions. | The task list, deadline, geographic exclusions, and any required disclosures. |
| Technical tasks | You performed an action such as testing or using a feature. | Whether the task requires a transaction, its gas cost, and the permissions requested. |
Eligibility is not guaranteed merely because a wallet interacted with a project. Check the project’s dated announcement and official claim interface rather than relying on social-media summaries.

How to claim an airdrop safely
- Find the official announcement. Start with the project’s established website or verified communication channel. Do not treat a direct message or an unsolicited token as proof that a claim is genuine.
- Confirm the details. Match the claim window, blockchain, token contract address, eligibility rule, and any geographic or account restrictions against information published through an independent official channel.
- Use a wallet you control. Confirm that the wallet and network are supported. A custodial exchange may not support or credit the new asset.
- Connect only to the verified interface. Check the domain carefully. A look-alike site can request a transaction that transfers assets or compromises the account.
- Read the wallet prompt. Inspect what you are being asked to sign, including token approvals or permissions. Never sign an unexpected approval or transaction just to see whether you qualify.
- Complete the claim and save the record. Keep the transaction hash, date and time, wallet address, chain, quantity received, and the method used to determine fair-market value.
A legitimate claim may still require network gas. A claim page that asks for a seed phrase or private key is not a normal wallet connection and should be treated as fraudulent.
How airdrop scams work
Ethereum.org warns that airdrop scams can place an NFT or token in your wallet and then direct you to a scam website to claim it. The site may request an approval that lets the attacker transfer assets or otherwise compromise the account.
Warning signs
- An unsolicited token or NFT accompanied by a claim instruction.
- A direct message offering a guaranteed allocation or urgent deadline.
- A domain that differs subtly from the project’s established domain.
- A request for a seed phrase, private key, or wallet backup.
- A transaction prompt that asks for broad token approval or an action unrelated to the stated claim.
Do not interact with an unsolicited asset merely to remove it. Verify the project, domain, contract address, and claim window through official channels before connecting a wallet. If a transaction is unclear, reject it.

Are crypto airdrops really free?
You generally do not pay a purchase price to receive an airdropped token, but receiving or claiming one can still have costs and obligations:

- Tax: In the United States, receipt can create ordinary income when the tax conditions described below are met.
- Risk: A malicious contract can expose assets or account permissions.
- Liquidity and lockups: A token may have limited trading liquidity or an unlock schedule, so an allocation is not the same as cash.
- Legal restrictions: Eligibility and distribution may differ by jurisdiction.

When income generally arises
IRS FAQ Q23 addresses a hard fork followed by an airdrop and states that receiving the cryptocurrency can produce taxable income. FAQ Q24 says ordinary income generally equals the token’s fair-market value when you have “dominion and control”—in practical terms, when the ledger records the asset and you can transfer, sell, exchange, or otherwise dispose of it.
That timing matters. An exchange’s internal policy can prevent control even if a blockchain record exists. Revenue Ruling 2019-24 explains that an airdrop is not received for tax purposes when you lack dominion and control, such as when an exchange does not support the new asset and has not credited it to your account.

- Quantity and token identifier.
- The fair-market-value source and method used.
- Later transfers, sales, exchanges, proceeds, and fees.
Because treatment depends on the facts, confirm current IRS guidance or consult a qualified tax professional, especially when an exchange, restricted token, or cross-border transaction is involved.

The SEC’s March 2026 interpretation discusses covered airdrops of non-security crypto assets where recipients provide no money, goods, services, or other consideration. It discusses distributions involving tasks or services separately. Whether a distribution falls within a particular legal category depends on the asset, transaction structure, what recipients do, and the applicable jurisdiction.
Accordingly, calling a distribution an “airdrop” is not a legal safe harbor. Projects and recipients should not assume that the label alone resolves securities, consumer-protection, tax, or other regulatory questions.

How to evaluate two airdrops
If you are deciding which opportunities deserve attention, compare the facts rather than ranking them by promised payout:
| Comparison point | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Eligibility | What activity qualifies, and what are the snapshot and claim dates? |
| Required actions | Must you transact, provide information, refer users, or perform technical tasks? |
| Gas and permissions | What fees and smart-contract approvals are required? |
| Custody | Will a wallet or exchange support the token, and who controls the keys? |
| Liquidity and unlocks | Can the token be transferred or sold, and are tokens released gradually? |
| Jurisdiction | Are there geographic, account, or regulatory exclusions? |
| Documentation | Are the contract address, eligibility method, supply, and claim window clearly documented? |
| Tax records | Can you identify when control began and document fair-market value? |
Do not assume that a larger advertised allocation is better. Security, liquidity, restrictions, and recordkeeping can matter more than the headline number.
Quick Recap
Key points to remember
- An airdrop sends tokens to selected wallets, commonly to encourage adoption, reward users, or broaden ownership.
- Eligibility is project-specific and may be based on holdings, snapshots, activity, platform use, community participation, referrals, or tasks.
- Claims often involve connecting a wallet and signing a transaction, creating smart-contract risk.
- Verify domains, contract addresses, announcements, and deadlines through official channels; never share seed phrases or private keys.
- For U.S. federal tax purposes, control of a token with fair-market value can create ordinary income, so keep complete records.
