What Is a Credit Card Reference Number?

A credit card reference number usually identifies a transaction, but the term can also mean a payment-routing reference. Learn how to tell which one you need.

A credit card reference number is usually an identifier that helps a merchant, payment processor, or card issuer find a particular transaction. The phrase is not standardized: it can also mean the information required to route a payment to a credit-card account. Before looking for a number or sharing one, establish whether the request concerns a purchase or a payment to the account.

What a credit card reference number identifies

For a purchase, a reference number is generally a transaction identifier recorded by a merchant, acquiring bank, processor, or issuer. It can help customer support locate a charge or check its status. The Balance describes one such identifier as an “outgoing acquirer number,” assigned by the acquiring bank and passed with transaction information to the issuer; that is one usage, not a universal card-network definition (The Balance).

In a separate context, a “reference” may be required when sending money to pay a credit-card account. For example, a 2019 UK Financial Ombudsman Service decision records Barclaycard’s position that the credit-card number was required as the reference for BACS payments to its card accounts. That case-specific payment instruction is not the transaction identifier for a purchase, and it should not be treated as a rule for other issuers or payment methods (Financial Ombudsman Service decision DRN8927067).

How it differs from other numbers

A transaction record can contain several identifiers, and they are not necessarily interchangeable. USAePay’s API documentation lists a unique transaction reference separately from a gateway-generated key, authorization code, invoice number, and, where returned, processor reference number (USAePay REST API). A Kansas Secretary of State guide similarly distinguishes a processor transaction ID, authorization number, system invoice number, and processor-assigned reference number (Kansas UCC External User Guide).

  • Transaction reference: an identifier associated with a particular purchase or payment record.
  • Authorization code: a separate field that may appear in processing records; do not assume it is the reference number.
  • Invoice number or gateway key: other identifiers that may be stored alongside the reference.
  • Card number used as a payment reference: in some payment instructions, this routes money to the card account rather than identifying a purchase.

If a support agent or form asks for a “reference number,” use the value specified for that transaction or payment record. If you cannot tell which field is meant, ask the merchant, processor, or issuer to identify it rather than substituting the card number or authorization code.

Where to find a purchase reference number

  1. Sign in to your card issuer’s online account and open the relevant transaction’s details. Check the posted transaction as well as any available statement; the issuer may show the identifier in one place, abbreviate it, or not display it at all (The Balance).
  2. If the charge is pending, check again after it posts. The Balance notes that a pending transaction may not yet have a reference number available.
  3. If you cannot see it, contact the issuer or merchant. Provide the transaction date, amount, and business name so they can help identify the charge. The merchant may be able to provide the reference.

How many digits is a credit card reference number?

There is no established universal length. The Balance reports a 23-digit format for the particular transaction-reference usage it describes, but official and processor records distinguish multiple system-specific identifiers. Treat 23 digits as an example reported by that source, not a rule for every issuer, network, processor, transaction, or country (The Balance; Kansas UCC External User Guide; USAePay REST API).

If you are making a payment to your card account

Follow the card issuer’s instructions for the specific payment method and verify the required reference with the issuer if anything is unclear. A purchase reference and an account-payment reference serve different purposes. In the UK Ombudsman case involving Barclaycard, the issuer said a card number was required for BACS payments and that payments received without it were returned; this illustrates why a reference-like number shown on a statement should not automatically be assumed to satisfy the receiving issuer’s payment instructions (Financial Ombudsman Service decision DRN8927067).
