It closed on August 7, 2025, with Paramount+ still listed in the resulting company’s portfolio. Max enters the picture through a separate, later Paramount agreement to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), the company associated with HBO Max. Paramount has said it plans to combine the streaming services, but the available announcements do not specify what current subscribers will need to do or how their bills will change.
Why the Skydance merger and the Max question are separate
The Skydance-Paramount transaction closed on August 7, 2025. Paramount’s closing announcement described the resulting company’s portfolio and included Paramount+. It did not announce that the deal ended Paramount+ subscriptions or automatically replaced them.
Max is relevant because Paramount later agreed to acquire WBD, which is associated with HBO Max. That acquisition is a separate transaction from the Skydance merger; the two should not be treated as one event.
What is known about combining Paramount+ and HBO Max
Paramount has described an intention to combine Paramount+ and HBO Max following the WBD transaction. In its March 2, 2026 investor-call transcript, the company also discussed consolidating streaming technology stacks. These statements establish a company plan and direction, not a completed change to customer accounts.

#1 Best Overall
Paramount’s February 27, 2026 announcement framed the planned combination as a way to strengthen its streaming offer. That is the company’s stated rationale; it does not specify what an existing subscriber will receive or pay.
Where the WBD transaction stood on October 4, 2026
On September 30, 2026, Paramount and WBD said they expected their transaction to close on October 6, subject to customary closing conditions. As of October 4, that date was still prospective, not confirmation that the deal had closed. The companies’ announcement of the anticipated closing should therefore be read as a scheduled expectation, not as notice that subscribers had already moved to a combined service.

What has not been announced for subscribers
The cited announcements and investor-call materials do not set out the operational terms for current Paramount+ or HBO Max customers. In particular, they do not establish:
- Whether subscribers will keep separate accounts or be migrated to a new service.
- How billing, renewal dates, or billing providers would be handled.
- Whether existing plans or prices will change, or what any new plans will cost.
- Whether customers will need a different app, or whether profiles, watchlists, and parental controls will transfer.
- When any customer-facing transition would take effect.
Those details are unresolved in the cited public materials; that does not prove no plan exists. For decisions about an individual account, rely on a later official subscriber FAQ or a notice from the service rather than assuming a merger plan has already changed a subscription.

How to make a subscription decision in the meantime
Do not keep or cancel either service on the assumption that a specific migration, price, or bundle is already in effect. Before changing a subscription, check the account’s current renewal date and billing provider, then compare any official post-closing offer against the services and terms you have now.
If the companies publish subscriber options, the financially useful details to compare are the monthly price and ad status; included content and sports or news access in your region; account and profile transfers; billing, cancellation, and renewal terms; and app availability and transition dates. None of those final customer-level terms is established in the cited materials.
