Pioneer-Standard Electronics did not shut down, and Arrow Electronics did not buy the entire company. On February 28, 2003, Pioneer-Standard sold substantially all of its Industrial Electronics Division to Arrow, then refocused on enterprise computer systems and changed its name to Agilysys Inc.
What Pioneer-Standard sold to Arrow
Before the sale, Pioneer-Standard had two main divisions: Computer Systems, which served enterprise technology customers, and Industrial Electronics, which distributed electronic components. The company’s 2003 annual report says each division had contributed approximately half of total revenue on average.
On February 28, 2003, Pioneer-Standard completed the sale of substantially all of the assets and liabilities of its Industrial Electronics Division (IED) to Arrow Electronics. The company reported preliminary pre-tax proceeds of $240 million. It said the money would improve financial flexibility, reduce debt and support growth in its enterprise computer-systems business. The exact final adjusted purchase consideration is not established in the sources cited here.
Did Arrow buy Pioneer-Standard?
No. Arrow acquired substantially all of the IED assets and liabilities, not Pioneer-Standard as a whole. The Computer Systems Division and the company’s continuing enterprise-systems operations remained.

Why Pioneer-Standard left component distribution
The strategic pressure was the growing need for global reach in electronic-components distribution. Contemporary EE Times coverage described Pioneer-Standard as lacking the global infrastructure of larger competitors Arrow and Avnet. Building that reach would take time and money, while electronics manufacturing was shifting toward lower-cost Asian regions, particularly China.
Thomas Sheerin, then a senior analyst at Thomas Weisel Partners, told EE Times that distributors without a global footprint risked losing suppliers or customers as manufacturing migrated from North America to Asia. The issue was not simply selling components online: Pioneer-Standard had invested in component-selection databases, research tools, engineering support and e-business tools, but still faced a scale and geographic-reach disadvantage.

What changed after the sale
Pioneer-Standard concentrated on its enterprise computer-systems business and undertook a restructuring. Its 2003 annual report says the company treated IED and Aprisa results as discontinued operations and planned to reduce overhead, eliminate unneeded facilities and assets, and downsize its corporate structure.
The name also changed. In its SEC proxy, the company explained that “Pioneer-Standard” was strongly associated with electronic-components distribution. Management said a new name would better reflect the company’s singular focus on enterprise computer systems and its role as a comprehensive IT solutions provider. In 2003, Pioneer-Standard became Agilysys Inc.

Was Pioneer-Standard shut down?
No. The sale was a major divestiture and repositioning, not a company-wide shutdown. Pioneer-Standard exited its industrial-components distribution business and continued with its enterprise-systems operations under the Agilysys name. A historical key-date timeline also records the IED sale and the name change in 2003.
