Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy, were first reported missing after the superyacht Bayesian sank off Sicily on August 19, 2024. They were later confirmed dead. The sinking killed seven of the 22 people aboard; 15 survived. Updates through 2025 describe ongoing investigations and an interim technical account, not a final determination of legal responsibility.

What happened to Jonathan and Judy Bloomer?

Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy were among six people initially reported missing as rescue operations began. Subsequent reporting confirmed that both died in the sinking. The initial “missing” status described the emergency response at the time; it was not their eventual outcome.

The Bayesian sank during a violent storm off Porticello, near Palermo, Sicily, on August 19, 2024. The yacht had 22 people aboard: 15 survived and seven died.

Who died and who survived?

The seven people who died were Jonathan and Judy Bloomer; technology entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his daughter, Hannah; attorney Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda; and yacht chef Recaldo Thomas. Fifteen other people survived.

What investigators have said about the sinking

Early accounts described a violent storm and raised possible explanations including a waterspout or downburst. These were evolving accounts, not a single settled explanation. Prosecutors later said a downburst was considered likely. In May 2025, the Associated Press reported that a British interim report concluded that extreme wind knocked the yacht over and that it could not recover. AP quoted the report as saying the vessel was knocked over by “extreme wind” and “couldn’t recover.” That is an interim technical account, not a final court finding or a complete public explanation of every factor.

What the legal investigation has—and has not—established

On August 24, 2024, Italian prosecutors announced an inquiry into possible multiple manslaughter and negligent shipwreck. Chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said the probe “was not aimed at any individual person” at that point. In May 2025, AP reported that the captain and two crew members were being investigated for possible responsibility. Being investigated is not a finding of guilt; the cited reporting does not establish a final judicial determination of responsibility.

What changed in 2025

The 56-meter (184-foot) yacht was recovered from the seabed in June 2025 and made available for further investigation. AP reported the recovery operation took place at a depth of 49 meters (160 feet). The recovery company, TMC Maritime, said the hull had been “successfully and safely recovered from the sea off the coast of northern Sicily.” The salvage and interim report added investigative material, but did not by themselves resolve legal responsibility.
