CAD-UL made embedded-system compilers and debuggers; it was not a semiconductor manufacturer. Intel later discontinued XScale and says it no longer has CAD-UL software or documentation available through its support channels.
What was CAD-UL?
CAD-UL was a German embedded-development tools company. Its products helped developers write, build and debug software for embedded devices, including protected-mode x86 systems. Customers named in the contemporary acquisition report included Nokia and Siemens. EE Times reported the acquisition and customer details on March 5, 2001.
A later Intel support discussion enumerated legacy toolchain components: an assembler; ANSI C and C++ compilers; a ROMable converter; librarian and linker; object-file checker; debug preprocessor; and debugger. The description indicates a development suite, not a single compiler. Intel’s 2023 support response identifies these components.
Why did Intel buy CAD-UL?
Intel said it acquired CAD-UL to develop an optimized toolset for the XScale processor family. An Intel spokesman told EE Times: “The reason for the acquisition is to build an optimised toolset for the Xscale processor family.” The deal was for an undisclosed amount. EE Times, March 5, 2001

The purchase fit a broader semiconductor-industry pattern in which processor makers brought independent embedded-tools expertise in-house. CAD-UL engineering and sales staff became Intel employees. Its separate circuit-board design and manufacturing operation was spun out as CAD-UL Electronic Services GmbH, so the entire business did not simply become an Intel chip operation. EE Times’ acquisition report describes the staffing and spinout.
What happened to CAD-UL Workbench and XDB?
Intel support later said CAD-UL Workbench was tied to Intel XScale, and that Intel had discontinued XScale products. In a July 2022 response, Intel said CAD-UL support had not been available for more than ten years and that it had no documents or software to provide. Intel support discussion, July 2022

In a separate 2023 response, Intel again described the toolchain as discontinued and said it no longer had access to the associated software and documentation. Intel support discussion, 2023
That means Intel support is not a route to obtain the original Workbench, XDB debugger, compilers or manuals. The statements establish what Intel can provide through its support channels; they do not establish whether a third-party archive has a particular file, whether a copy is complete, or whether its use is licensed.

Can you still download the CAD-UL compiler or debugger?
Intel says it no longer has the software or related documents available to supply. The cited support responses do not identify an official download location or a current authorized distributor. Treat claims that a download is an official Intel release with caution unless the source can substantiate its provenance and license.
If you already have an installation, disk image or project archive, check the license and original records before copying or using the binaries. A file’s presence on an archive does not establish permission to use or redistribute it, and the available Intel responses do not clarify legacy license terms.

What should you do with a legacy CAD-UL project?
Before choosing a migration or preservation approach, establish what you actually have. Compatibility depends on the project files, tool versions, target hardware and the operating system that can run the original tools; Intel’s discontinuation notices do not provide a supported replacement matrix.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
- Inventory the project. Record the exact Workbench or XDB version if shown, compiler and linker components, project and source files, build scripts, libraries, configuration settings, and target processor or board.
- Preserve original materials. Keep copies of installers, license files, manuals, project sources and known-good outputs in a controlled archive. Document where each item came from and avoid overwriting the only copy.
- Check legal and technical access separately. Confirm that you have rights to use the binaries, then determine whether a compatible host environment and the original target hardware are available. Neither question is answered simply by finding a download.
- Choose a goal. If you need to reproduce an old build, preserving a known working environment may matter most. If you need to maintain or change the product, assess whether the source can be moved to a currently supported toolchain and test the resulting firmware on the actual target.
- Validate outputs. Compare build artifacts and behavior against archived releases or hardware tests before relying on a migrated project. A successful compile alone does not prove equivalent runtime behavior.
