The “$600 billion” headline referred to an estimated fall in the combined market value of cryptocurrencies over just over a week in October 2025—not $600 billion in cash withdrawals. Bitcoin fell sharply during the episode, including a reported drop to $103,550 on October 17. This is historical market news, not a report of a current October 2026 crash.
What happened to Bitcoin?
Bitcoin’s selloff unfolded over several days. The Business Times reported that Bitcoin reached an all-time high of $126,251 on October 6, 2025. On October 10–11, a sudden market shock coincided with more than $19 billion in liquidations of leveraged positions, according to Reuters reporting republished by Investing.com. By October 17, Bitcoin had fallen as much as 4% that day to $103,550, its lowest level since June, Bloomberg reported.

Did crypto really lose $600 billion?
That figure described an estimated decrease in the combined market capitalization of crypto over just over a week, as reported in the matching Forbes article. Market capitalization is the market price of assets multiplied by their circulating supply. When prices fall, the total marked value falls too; the change does not mean that an equal amount of cash left crypto markets.
The more than $19 billion in liquidations is a separate measure: it concerns leveraged positions forcibly closed during the October 10–11 shock. It should not be added to the broader market-cap decline or described as the same kind of loss.

Why did Bitcoin fall?
Contemporaneous reports linked the initial liquidation shock to escalating US–China trade tensions. Bloomberg’s syndicated report also cited exchange technical glitches and price discrepancies among factors analysts discussed around the October 10–11 event. These reports provide context, not proof of a single cause for the entire decline.
Reuters also reported that investors were rushing to hedge against further falls. That indicates concern about volatility at the time; it does not establish what prices would do next. Rachael Lucas, an analyst at BTC Markets, remarked on the timing: “What’s striking is the timing of the crash coinciding with major players pursuing banking licenses,” as quoted by Bloomberg reporting republished by Advisor Perspectives. The observation does not show that banking-license activity caused the selloff.

Is this a current Bitcoin crash?
No. The “$600 billion” headline matches a Forbes article published October 17, 2025, and updated October 18. Its figures and the price reports above describe that historical episode. They do not establish Bitcoin’s price or market direction on October 4, 2026, and they are not a forecast.
