Goodwill does not publish one nationwide list of 30 household items that every donation center rejects. Acceptance rules vary by local organization. The clearest national guidance is to avoid broken or soiled goods and anything recalled, banned, or outside current safety standards; many Goodwill organizations also do not accept mattresses. Check your local center before making a trip, especially with furniture or bulky and specialized items.
Why Goodwill may refuse a household item
A local Goodwill may decline an item because its organization does not accept that category, because the item is broken or soiled, or because it presents a product-safety concern. Goodwill Industries International’s donation guidance says rules vary by location and advises donors not to give recalled, banned, or unsafe products. A clean, working item is not automatically eligible if it is recalled or prohibited.
That means “30 items Goodwill won’t take” is not an accurate universal rule. The national guidance does not give an exhaustive list of 30 prohibited household goods. The examples below are reasons to check local policy—not a claim that every Goodwill rejects each item.
30 household items to check with your local Goodwill
Use this as a call-ahead checklist, not a nationwide refusal list. For items with an explicit national guideline, the wording below reflects that guidance; for other examples, acceptance depends on the local organization and the item’s condition.

Does Goodwill take furniture or mattresses?
Mattresses
Goodwill says many of its organizations do not accept mattresses. That is not the same as a network-wide ban, so check the policy for the specific donation center before arranging transport.
Other furniture
Furniture acceptance depends on the local organization and the type of furniture. Goodwill’s FAQ puts it plainly: “It will depend on which Goodwill organization you’re donating to and what kind of furniture you’re donating.” Contact the local center with the item type and, for bulky pieces, its dimensions or condition.

How to check and prepare a donation
- Find your local Goodwill’s rules. Check its website or contact the donation center. Ask specifically about furniture, mattresses, computers, and any bulky or specialized item.
- Inspect condition and safety. Set aside broken or soiled goods. Clean clothing and test electrical or battery-operated items. Do not donate recalled, banned, or unsafe products.
- Pack to prevent damage. Separate housewares from textiles and secure fragile items. A recyclable box or reusable tote/bin can make transport easier, but packaging does not make an ineligible item acceptable.
- Ask about textile alternatives. If clothing or another textile is not wearable, ask whether the location accepts it for recycling or repurposing. Programs differ by center.
- Deliver only during accepted donation procedures. Do not leave goods unattended outside a donation center.
What to do if Goodwill cannot accept it
Ask the local organization whether it has a textile recycling or repurposing option for unsuitable textiles. For other goods, check with a local reuse, recycling, or disposal service about the item and your location; eligibility and service coverage are local. Do not leave rejected items at a donation site unless staff explicitly directs you to do so.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Goodwill’s national guidance does—and does not—say
Goodwill Industries International’s pages provide general donation advice, but local organizations set acceptance rules. The national guidance supports avoiding broken or soiled items and products that are recalled, banned, or unsafe; it names mattresses as something many organizations do not accept and directs donors to local rules for furniture. It does not establish a universal list of 30 rejected household items.
