ClearEdge announced the purchase on November 21, 2013, describing the unit as a 400 kW system that provides heat and power. The available records confirm the purchase, but do not establish when or whether this particular unit was commissioned, or whether it remains in operation.
What the bank purchased
ClearEdge Power’s November 21, 2013 announcement named the PureCell Model 400 and the First National Technology Center in Omaha as the buyer and site. The company said the system would provide 400 kW of heat and power. The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2013 Fuel Cell Technologies Market Report, published in 2014, also lists the bank’s project at 400 kW and identifies the Model 400 as a phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC).
The announcement describes a purchase, not a documented installation date. The records available here do not establish the unit’s commissioning, later service history, or current operating condition.
How this differed from the bank’s earlier fuel cells
The 2013 purchase followed an earlier fuel-cell installation at the data center dating to 1999. A DOE case study describes that earlier system as four 200 kW PAFCs, for 800 kW of total fuel-cell capacity, supplying primary power to four rotary UPS units. Two separate natural-gas distribution sources provided fuel redundancy.

- Name: Hydrogen Fuel Cell
- Type: PEM
- Size: 50x50MM
- Electrochemical device, no pollution, no harmful substances emission
- Exquisite workmanship, compact size, portable and easy to use
DOE reports that the earlier installation accumulated more than 89,000 operating hours between May 1999 and October 2009, with 99.9999% availability during the case-study period. Those figures refer to that earlier installation and period; they do not demonstrate the performance of the PureCell Model 400 purchased in 2013.
What ClearEdge projected—and what the figure means
ClearEdge’s announcement said the new system would prevent the release of more than 1,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually. This was the company’s projected benefit, not a measured post-installation result for the bank’s unit. The announcement does not provide a subsequent measurement confirming those avoided emissions.

Why current PureCell specifications show a different capacity
Doosan Fuel Cell’s current PureCell Model 400 NG product page lists a 440 kW rating and 90% total efficiency: 43% electrical and 47% heat. The page describes the current product configuration; it does not establish that these are the specifications of the unit the bank purchased in 2013. The 400 kW figure belongs to the historical purchase as described by ClearEdge and recorded by DOE, while 440 kW is the current product-page rating.

The vendor release records the transaction and its stated benefits, and DOE’s market report independently records the project at 400 kW. Neither source establishes the purchased unit’s commissioning date or present status. In the release, Brenda Dooley, then president of First National Buildings, said the bank had experienced reliability from its earlier fuel cells since installing them in 1999; that is a 2013 comment about the earlier equipment, not an independent reliability assessment of the new purchase.

The available sources also do not disclose competing bids or the bank’s comparative selection process. They support a specific procurement account, not a broader conclusion about why the bank chose fuel cells over other data-center power options.
