Walmart receipt codes identify parts of a transaction, but Walmart does not publish a universal key for every abbreviation or letter printed on receipts. Store and register labels such as ST#, OP#, TE# and TR# are commonly interpreted as transaction identifiers, while tax letters can vary and should not be treated as definitive without checking the receipt totals and local rules. To find a purchase, Walmart’s app and receipt lookup are more reliable than trying to decode every character.
How to read the main receipt fields
ST#, OP#, TE# and TR#
Receipt lines such as ST#, OP#, TE# and TR# are commonly described as the store number, operator or cashier number, terminal or register number, and transaction sequence at that terminal. These are useful as clues about where and how a sale was rung up, not as product identifiers. Walmart’s reviewed customer guidance does not publish an official glossary for these fields, so treat those expansions as common interpretations rather than guaranteed definitions. A secondary receipt explainer also characterizes them this way.
Item descriptions and long numbers
Product names may be shortened to fit the printed line. A 12-digit number can be a UPC, a product identifier used primarily in North America; Walmart Marketplace says product identifiers are generally printed above or below the barcode on the package. That does not establish that every long number on a Walmart receipt is a UPC, nor that a number will always lead to a current product listing. Walmart Marketplace’s UPC guidance is a safer reference for what a UPC represents.
Tax letters and tax totals
There is no official Walmart receipt-letter key in the customer guidance reviewed. A secondary guide reports that N is commonly read as not taxed and X as taxed, but those readings are unofficial. It describes O as disputed and other letter interpretations as uncertain. Tax labels and the meaning of Tax 1 or Tax 2 can depend on local rules and register configuration; do not infer a specific tax rate, jurisdiction, or benefit eligibility from a letter alone. The secondary guide notes the disagreement around these codes.

If a tax marking matters for reimbursement or a tax claim, compare it with the receipt’s tax totals and check the applicable state or local rules. Contact Walmart or the relevant tax authority if the figures still do not make sense.
Receipt barcode and TC#
Walmart documents scanning the receipt barcode in its app to associate a store purchase with an account. That makes the barcode useful for retrieving or linking the transaction, but Walmart’s reviewed help pages do not specify exactly what data it encodes or provide a universal definition for a printed TC#. Do not treat either as a product code. Walmart’s receipt lookup instructions explain the supported app and lookup options.

Use Walmart’s tools to find a purchase
Scan a store receipt in the app
- Open the Walmart app and choose the barcode icon in the search bar.
- Scan the barcode printed on the receipt to link the store purchase.
Walmart’s instructions explain this as a receipt-linking method; they do not promise that every printed code can be decoded independently. See Walmart’s receipt lookup help page.
Look up a missing receipt
For a supported debit- or credit-card purchase, Walmart’s receipt lookup asks for the store location (ZIP code or city and state), purchase date and total, card type, and the card’s last four digits. The flow can look up and download a receipt. If you paid another way or need more help, Walmart directs customers to support chat. Use the official flow rather than sharing full payment details publicly. Walmart receipt lookup.

Keep survey codes separate from purchase codes
A receipt survey code is for a promotion, not for identifying an item or explaining register fields. Walmart’s Q3 2026 sweepstakes rules say receipt-invited entrants must enter the unique code at survey.walmart.com within one week of the receipt date, subject to the promotion dates and eligibility rules. Those rules also state: “NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. A PURCHASE DOES NOT IMPROVE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING.” The timing and terms are specific to that 2026 promotion; check the rules associated with your own receipt because they can change. Walmart’s sweepstakes rules list five $1,000 gift-card grand prizes and 750 $100 gift-card first prizes for Q3 2026.

Choose the right source for the question
- Trying to identify a product? Check the package barcode or product listing; a UPC is a product identifier, not a transaction number.
- Trying to understand tax? Compare the item marking with the receipt totals and local tax rules rather than relying on an unofficial letter chart.
- Need proof of purchase? Scan the receipt barcode in the Walmart app or use Walmart’s receipt lookup.
- Trying to enter a survey? Follow the rules and deadline printed or linked for that receipt’s promotion.
