Bill Gates’s March 21, 2023 essay, “The Age of AI has begun,” argues that artificial intelligence could be as transformative as mobile phones and the Internet. He supports that view with two personal turning points in computing history and considers possible effects on work, education, health care, travel and communication. The essay presents a broad forecast, not evidence that those changes have already happened.
What is the essay, and why was it called a “7-page missive”?
Gates published “The Age of AI has begun” on Gates Notes on March 21, 2023. Its subtitle states the central comparison: “Artificial intelligence is as revolutionary as mobile phones and the Internet.” Gates Notes describes the article as an explanation of why he sees AI as revolutionary and says it offers three principles for thinking about AI.
The “seven-page” description comes from an NDTV report published the next day, March 22, 2023. Gates Notes lists the piece as an article with a 14-minute reading estimate; the page’s own presentation does not establish a page count. The label is therefore best understood as NDTV’s description, not the essay’s official format.
Why does Gates compare AI with earlier technological shifts?
Gates grounds his argument in two experiences he considered revolutionary. He recalls being introduced to a graphical user interface in 1980 by programmer Charles Simonyi, a conversation that he says helped shape Microsoft’s agenda for years. He then describes OpenAI’s progress: after meeting with the team since 2016, he challenged it in mid-2022 to train an AI to pass an Advanced Placement Biology exam, including questions that required critical thought rather than straightforward recall.

These stories explain the perspective behind the essay. Gates is drawing an analogy from his experience of major computing changes; the examples are not, by themselves, proof that AI will have the same effects or scale.
What changes does Gates predict?
Gates’s essay frames AI’s possible influence broadly. In an excerpt attributed to the essay, he writes: “The development of AI is as fundamental as the creation of the microprocessor, the personal computer, the Internet, and the mobile phone. It will change the way people work, learn, travel, get health care, and communicate with each other.”

That language is a prediction. It identifies areas where Gates expects change, but it should not be read as a measured account of outcomes already achieved. The essay’s stated scope includes productivity, health, education, risks and problems as well as everyday activities.
What are Gates’s three principles for thinking about AI?
Gates Notes says the essay offers three principles, but the indexed summary available for the article does not enumerate them. Without the full text, it would be misleading to supply a list or attribute a paraphrase of specific recommendations to Gates. Readers seeking the principles should consult the essay itself rather than treat the summary as a complete transcript.

How should readers assess the essay’s central claim?
The argument is an invitation to take AI seriously as a potentially foundational technology. Its comparison with phones and the Internet conveys Gates’s view of the scale of change; his personal examples show why he sees parallels with earlier computing advances. The essay’s predictions span many parts of life, but they remain forecasts, not independently established results. Keeping that distinction clear makes it possible to engage with the argument without mistaking confidence or breadth for proof.
