Important: this is an archival look at the US Prime Day roundup Ars published on July 17–18, 2024—not a live October 2026 deal list. Prices, coupons, inventory, Prime eligibility, and sellers have changed. The original article’s historical context is documented by Ars Technica and its accessible article mirror.
What the 2024 roundup covered
Ars’ list was a short syndication of Wired’s Prime Day tracking, assembled during the second day of Amazon’s July 2024 summer event. It targeted technically minded readers rather than presenting every household bargain. The coverage included computing, networking, storage, displays, gaming, audio, mobile devices, smart-home hardware, cameras, and portable power.

Why those prices are not current deals
Prime Day pricing is unusually volatile. An advertised amount may be an automatic sale price, a coupon that must be clipped, a time-limited Lightning Deal, a Prime-member price, or a seller-specific offer. The 2024 roundup explicitly marked some offers—including the MacBook Air and a Lenovo business laptop—as coupon prices.

- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
As of October 1, 2026, the available record does not verify current prices, stock, coupons, seller identity, or Prime eligibility. Do not use a 2024 amount as a benchmark for an August or October 2026 purchase. Amazon’s displayed “was” price also may not represent a product’s normal market price; Ars forum readers raised concerns about reference prices, marketplace sellers, and whether Prime Day savings were genuinely exceptional (OpenForum discussion).
How to decide whether a Prime Day deal is good
- Identify the exact configuration. Match model number, screen size, RAM, SSD capacity, storage size, wireless standard, color, and included accessories. Product names often cover several materially different versions.
- Check the price condition. Look for a clipped coupon, Prime-only label, Lightning Deal timer, quantity limit, or recurring subscription. Clip the coupon before checkout and treat the final cart total as authoritative.
- Inspect the seller. Confirm whether Amazon, the manufacturer, or a marketplace business is selling and fulfilling the item. Read the return window and determine who handles warranty service.
- Compare recent prices. Use a reputable price-history service and at least one competing retailer. A large percentage reduction from Amazon’s reference price is not proof of a historical low.
- Check the product’s generation and support. A superseded router, phone, camera, or wearable can be sensible at a deep clearance price but poor value at a routine sale price.
- Calculate ownership cost. Include subscriptions, replacement filters, proprietary chargers, storage upgrades, consumables, and required accessories.
Category guidance for Ars readers
Laptops and tablets
Start with the processor class and generation, then check memory and storage. A low-priced base configuration can become expensive if RAM is soldered or the SSD is difficult to replace. Compare display brightness and resolution, port selection, battery expectations, and operating-system support. The MacBook Air and Lenovo offers in the 2024 list were coupon-dependent, so their headline prices were not automatic at checkout. Windows, macOS, and ChromeOS also differ in repairability, application support, and update policy.

TVs and monitors
OLED generally offers superior blacks but introduces burn-in considerations; QLED and mini-LED models can provide higher sustained brightness, depending on the exact panel and backlight. For gaming, verify HDMI 2.1, VRR, and the actual maximum refresh rate rather than relying on a series name. Check the regional model number and warranty, particularly when an older panel is marketed as a clearance bargain.
Networking
Wi-Fi 7 is most useful when your clients and internet plan can exploit it. A mesh system with wired backhaul and suitably fast Ethernet can outperform a newer wireless standard connected only over a congested wireless link. Confirm compatibility before mixing nodes, count Ethernet ports, and read the vendor’s firmware and privacy policy. Do not buy a three-pack when one or two access points adequately cover the home.

Storage and PC components
For an NVMe SSD, verify M.2 form factor, PCIe generation, sustained-write behavior, endurance rating, warranty, and whether your motherboard provides a heatsink. A 20 TB external hard drive is useful for local backup but is not archival protection by itself; keep another copy elsewhere. The AM5 motherboard and Ryzen 5 7600X require socket, BIOS, memory, and cooler compatibility checks before purchase.
Audio
ANC, microphone quality, multipoint behavior, codec support, comfort, and battery replacement options matter more than the discount percentage. Confirm compatibility with your phone and computer, and check whether the companion app requires an account. Older models can remain excellent, but firmware support and battery wear should be part of the price calculation.

- Gift Card has no fees and no expiration date
- Gift Card is nested inside a specialty gift box

- Scan and redeem any Gift Card with a mobile or tablet device via the Amazon App
Smart-home and security devices
Separate hardware cost from data and subscription cost. Ring, Nest, baby-monitor, and cloud-camera features may depend on recurring plans; local recording and Matter or ecosystem support can materially change the value. Review account security, privacy controls, battery life, and the manufacturer’s support history before buying a discontinued generation.
Power stations and charging equipment
Useable watt-hours, continuous output, surge capacity, charging speed, battery chemistry, pass-through or UPS behavior, solar-input limits, weight, and warranty are more informative than a headline capacity. A compact station may suit occasional camping but not emergency home backup. Treat chargers, batteries, and jump starters as safety-sensitive products and buy from a seller with clear warranty responsibility.

Deals to skip, even when the discount looks large
- Old-generation hardware whose price is only modestly below a current replacement.
- Configurations with too little RAM or storage to meet the intended workload.
- Products whose apparent savings come from an inflated reference price or a frequently repeated sale.
- Cloud devices whose required subscription outweighs the initial discount.
- Marketplace listings with unclear seller identity, altered model numbers, or limited warranty support.
- Safety- or privacy-sensitive products where documentation, software support, or return terms are inadequate.
Where to compare before buying
Amazon is only one seller. Check Best Buy for price matching, local pickup, and open-box stock; Walmart for mass-market competition; B&H Photo for cameras, displays, and professional gear; and Newegg for components and storage, while carefully checking the marketplace seller. Manufacturer stores such as Apple, Lenovo, Samsung, Sony, Anker, Western Digital, and Jackery can offer clearer configuration and warranty terms.
Bottom line for shoppers
The 2024 Ars roundup is useful as a map of product categories and models that attracted technical shoppers, not as a current shopping list. A Prime Day label and a large percentage discount do not establish value. Buy only after checking the exact configuration, final checkout price, seller, support, ownership costs, and at least one competing retailer—and remember that many Prime Day prices recur during Black Friday, manufacturer clearances, and rival retailer events.
