What Are the Risks of Investing in Privacy Coins?

Privacy coins can lose value or become harder to trade. Understand the risks of liquidity, technology, custody, privacy design and changing rules before investing.

Privacy coins carry the same core risks as other crypto assets—sharp price swings, uncertain demand, theft and technology changes—plus potential limits on exchange access and extra questions about how their privacy features work. You could lose some or all of the money you invest. The risks vary by coin, investment method and jurisdiction; privacy features do not guarantee that every transaction is untraceable.

Can you lose all your money investing in privacy coins?

Yes. Privacy coins are speculative assets, not guaranteed stores of value. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) says investors should consider whether a digital asset will gain adoption as a medium of exchange or store of value, whether demand will continue, what competitors may emerge, and how technology could change. Buying only because you hope to sell later at a higher price is speculation and carries considerable risk, the CFTC cautions in its digital-currency advisory.

A loss can arise from a falling market price, a loss of buyers, a protocol or implementation problem, theft, or difficulty selling when you need to. These risks can interact: reduced access to trading venues may make it harder to exit, while a technology or regulatory concern may weaken demand. The cited guidance identifies these risks but does not establish the probability or likely scale of any particular loss.

What risks should investors assess?

Price, demand and competition

A privacy coin’s price depends in part on whether people continue to want or use it, and whether it can compete with other digital assets or payment methods. A compelling technical design or stated purpose does not ensure adoption or a resale market. If you invest on the assumption that another buyer will pay more, you are relying on speculation rather than a guaranteed return.

Liquidity and exchange access

Liquidity is a risk identified by the CFTC. A coin may be difficult to buy or sell at a desired price if trading is thin or a venue stops supporting it. Delistings can also complicate deposits, withdrawals or transfers. In a 2025 report, the Council of Europe describes privacy-coin delistings from major exchanges following MiCA’s entry into force. That is dated European context, not proof that every exchange or jurisdiction has banned these assets.

The same report says that, as of May 2025, daily Monero-to-USDT exchange volumes remained high, reaching around €100 million per day. This is a dated observation from that report, not a current volume figure or a guarantee that a particular investor can trade Monero today. Check deposit, trading and withdrawal support directly with venues serving your location.

Technology, privacy and theft

Protocol changes or technical failures can affect an asset’s value, and hacking can result in theft. Privacy features are not a substitute for secure custody and do not establish that every transaction is impossible to trace. Different coins also make different design choices. The Council of Europe’s 2025 report describes Monero’s privacy as built in, while Zcash anonymization is not enabled by default. Those distinctions matter when evaluating the information a transaction may expose and the technical assumptions a user must understand; they do not, by themselves, establish that one coin is safer or a better investment.

Platform and custody risk

A service where you trade may also hold your assets or perform other financial functions. Investor.gov warned in a 2023 alert that combining exchange, broker-dealer and custodial functions can create conflicts of interest and risks, and that customers may not receive protections associated with SEC-registered entities. The alert does not establish the current status of every platform.

Before using a service, find out who controls the private keys, what withdrawal rights and limits apply, and what happens if withdrawals or the platform’s service are suspended. Do not assume that a balance shown on an exchange is protected like a bank deposit or that a crypto platform has the same investor protections as a registered securities firm.

Regulatory, reputational and access risk

Rules and venue policies depend on location and can change. FinCEN’s guidance says virtual currency has no legal-tender status in any jurisdiction and distinguishes users from exchangers and administrators. It is a U.S. regulatory document, not a worldwide determination that owning or trading a specific privacy coin is legal or available everywhere. Check current official rules for your country and state or province, and confirm that the services you intend to use support the asset there.

There can also be reputational and policy risk. In its 2025 Form 10-K, Cypherpunk Technologies identified concerns about perceptions of money laundering or sanctions circumvention, exchange delistings, and EU measures it said would begin July 1, 2027, prohibiting transactions involving anonymous wallets and privacy-focused digital assets such as ZEC. That is the company’s risk disclosure; it should not be read as an independent confirmation here of the measure’s precise scope or application to every user.

How do Monero and Zcash risks differ?

They should not be treated as interchangeable. Monero’s privacy is described as built in, whereas Zcash anonymization is not enabled by default, according to the Council of Europe’s 2025 report. A practical comparison should also account for whether you can trade and withdraw each asset through compliant services in your location, the technical and custody assumptions you can manage, and the particular risks of any investment product used.

Does an investment trust remove the risks?

No. An investment vehicle can add risks on top of the underlying coin’s price and technology risks. The Grayscale Zcash Trust’s 2025 Form 10-K says the trust held approximately 2.4% of ZEC in circulation on December 31, 2025. It also states that its shares were not then redeemable and could trade at substantial premiums or discounts to net asset value. Those disclosures illustrate possible concentration, redemption and share-price tracking concerns for that trust; they do not describe direct ZEC ownership or every investment product.

If considering a trust or other wrapper, examine its fees, redemption terms, trading liquidity and how closely its share price may track the underlying asset. Do not assume that buying a product linked to a coin gives you the same rights or risks as holding the coin directly.

What to check before investing

  • Loss capacity: Decide whether you could withstand a substantial loss, including the possibility of losing the full amount invested.
  • Local rules and venue support: Verify current ownership and trading rules with official sources for your jurisdiction, then confirm the specific coin’s deposit, trade and withdrawal availability with each service you plan to use.
  • Custody and access: Understand who controls the keys, withdrawal conditions, service-suspension procedures and protections that actually apply.
  • Coin-specific design: Review how privacy works by default, what information may be visible, and the technical assumptions involved.
  • Product terms: If using a trust or other wrapper, inspect its fees, redemption rights, liquidity and potential premium or discount to the underlying asset.
