A payday loan is short-term, high-cost borrowing intended to bridge a cash-flow gap, often until income arrives. “Quick cash” is marketing shorthand: it does not guarantee approval or fast payment. There is no universal eligibility or document checklist; lenders must assess whether you can afford the loan, and their checks vary.
What is a payday loan?
A payday loan is a form of short-term credit commonly marketed for emergencies or a temporary shortfall before your next income. The money is generally paid into your bank account, and repayment commonly runs over one to six months, although the lender sets the actual term. MoneyHelper explains how payday loans work.
Repayment may be collected directly from your bank account under a continuous payment authority. Before agreeing, check the payment date and make sure the repayment will not leave you short of rent, energy costs or other essential bills.
What can a payday loan cost?
MoneyHelper says UK payday loans are subject to FCA price caps: interest is capped at 0.8% per day, default fees at £15, and the total amount repaid cannot exceed twice the amount borrowed. These are limits, not a quote for a particular loan; your agreement and repayment timing determine the actual cost.

To illustrate the interest cap, MoneyHelper gives the example of borrowing £100 for 30 days and repaying on time: the maximum interest would be £24. That is a cap illustration, not an advertised rate or a promise that a loan will cost that amount.
Compare the total amount repayable, APR and fees, the amount and timing of each payment, the consequences of missing a payment, and any fee or restriction for repaying early. A headline rate alone does not show whether the instalment fits your budget.

When might borrowing be considered—and when is it risky?
A payday loan may be considered for a short-lived cash shortfall only if you understand the full cost and can repay on schedule without missing essential payments. It is not a reliable way to fix a continuing budget gap or repay other borrowing.
A payment you cannot afford can lead to default charges and a missed-payment mark on your credit file, while worsening financial pressure. MoneyHelper advises against payday borrowing if you intend to repay other debt, already rely on borrowing, are unsure you can repay on time, or want to pay for something you cannot afford.

Before applying, consider whether you can ask a bill provider for time to pay, ask an employer about access to wages already earned, check whether you qualify for a credit-union loan, or speak to a free debt-advice service. These options depend on your circumstances and their terms; do not assume any will be available or cheaper.
Who is eligible for a payday loan?
There is no universal age, income, employment, residency or credit-score checklist established by the rules cited here. Lenders set their criteria and decide whether their checks support lending in your circumstances. Poor credit does not guarantee acceptance, and income from outside employment does not by itself establish that you are ineligible.
Rank #4
A lender must make a reasonable creditworthiness assessment using sufficient information, including whether you can repay. The extent of its checks should be proportionate to matters such as the amount and cost of credit and your financial position. The FCA says, “We do not prescribe what checks should be made.” That does not remove the lender’s duty to assess your application responsibly.
MoneyHelper recommends looking for an eligibility checker before making a full application. It describes this as a soft search that can indicate likely acceptance without leaving a mark on your credit file; a full application may be recorded. Check the selected lender’s explanation, because processes can differ.

What documents are required?
There is no single document checklist for every payday lender. The lender needs enough information to assess affordability and verify application details, but the current rules discussed above do not require every applicant to submit the same payslips, bank statements or identity documents. Follow the selected lender’s current instructions, and do not send sensitive documents to a firm you have not verified.
Application and verification practices have varied by lender and channel. As historical context only, the CMA’s 2015 investigation described high-street lenders usually asking to see identification and proof of address, while online lenders asked for a mobile phone number. Those findings describe practices at that time, not a current rule or checklist.
How to check a lender and apply carefully
- Work out the need and repayment. Borrow only the amount needed, then check that the scheduled repayment and interest fit after essential bills.
- Compare the terms. Check total repayable, APR and fees, payment dates and amounts, late-payment consequences, and early-repayment conditions.
- Use an eligibility checker if available. Confirm whether it is a soft search and what happens if you proceed to a full application.
- Verify the firm. Use the FCA Firm Checker to check the lender or broker. A broker introduces or searches for credit; it is not necessarily the lender, and it may charge a fee.
- Read and keep the agreement. Confirm who is lending, how and when repayments will be collected, and retain a copy of the terms.
MoneyHelper says borrowers may withdraw within the first 14 days. If you do, you must repay the credit used and interest accrued; extra charges should be refunded. Check the agreement and MoneyHelper’s guidance for details.
If you cannot make a repayment
Contact the lender as soon as you think you may miss a payment and ask whether an affordable alternative arrangement is possible. Do not take another loan to repay this one or roll it over to postpone the problem. Free debt advice can help you prioritise bills and discuss next steps; MoneyHelper’s bill-prioritising guidance explains options for people struggling with repayments.
