Extended Unemployment Benefits, usually called Extended Benefits (EB), are additional unemployment compensation that may become available after you use up regular unemployment benefits—if your state’s unemployment conditions trigger an EB period and you meet the state’s eligibility rules. EB is not automatically available to everyone whose regular benefits run out.
How many extra weeks can Extended Benefits provide?
The basic EB program can provide up to 13 additional weeks. Some states have adopted an option allowing up to seven more weeks, for a maximum of 20 weeks. These are program ceilings, not guaranteed durations: the number of weeks available to an individual can be lower depending on the active program period, state law, and the person’s eligibility. The U.S. Department of Labor’s EB overview describes these limits.
The weekly benefit amount is generally the same as the person’s regular unemployment benefit amount. The actual amount depends on the claimant’s existing benefit and claim details; there is no single EB dollar amount for everyone.
Who may qualify?
EB may be available after a person exhausts other unemployment insurance benefits, but qualifying for regular unemployment does not by itself establish eligibility for EB. Federal regulations require exhaustion of other benefits, a timely EB claim, and satisfaction of applicable state-law requirements. States set the relevant earnings or work tests, and the state agency decides whether a claimant qualifies. See the federal EB regulations and the Department of Labor’s program guidance.

Is EB available in your state now?
EB availability depends on state unemployment conditions and the program’s trigger periods. The Congressional Research Service reported that EB was not payable in any state in fiscal year 2025, but that retrospective statement does not establish which states, if any, have an active EB period now. Do not treat it as a live state-by-state status report.
The Department of Labor says states notify people who have exhausted regular benefits when an EB period begins and may tell them whether they appear eligible. For current availability and instructions on your claim, check with your state unemployment agency. The Department of Labor provides links to state unemployment insurance agencies.

How EB differs from pandemic-era extensions
EB is a standing federal-state program that becomes available when state economic conditions meet the applicable triggers. Pandemic-era programs—including Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA), Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC), Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC), and Mixed Earner Unemployment Compensation (MEUC)—were temporary programs that ended in September 2021. They are not current general extensions of regular unemployment benefits. States could continue resolving claims for weeks covered while those programs were authorized.
| Feature | Extended Benefits (EB) | Pandemic-era programs |
|---|---|---|
| Program status | Standing federal-state program | Temporary programs that ended in September 2021 |
| What makes benefits available | State unemployment conditions trigger an EB period | Temporary federal programs with their own eligibility rules and authorized periods |
| Relationship to regular benefits | May follow exhaustion of other unemployment benefits | Varied by program; they should not be treated as current EB |
| Potential duration | Up to 13 extra weeks under the basic program; some states allow up to 20 weeks total | Varied by program and authorized period |
| Eligibility decision | State unemployment agency applies the relevant state requirements | Rules differed by program; the programs have expired |
The Department of Labor’s unemployment programs table records the temporary programs and their end dates. The Congressional Research Service also discusses their expiration in its report on unemployment insurance provisions enacted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

What to do if your regular benefits are ending
- Contact your state unemployment insurance agency. Ask whether EB is active in your state and whether your claim may qualify.
- Follow the agency’s claim instructions. If the agency directs you to file an EB claim or complete weekly certifications, follow its deadlines and procedures.
- Confirm your individual status with the agency. A general explanation cannot determine your entitlement; state rules, trigger status, and your claim facts control.
