Meg Whitman became Executive Chair on September 9, 2026, and Cody Perdue became Interim CFO on September 30. The company has also announced three incoming directors whose appointments take effect October 14, 2026—after the October 4, 2026 evidence cutoff.
Who is in charge now?
Susan Morris remains CEO. Whitman’s appointment was to a newly created Executive Chair role, not a replacement for Morris. Albertsons says Whitman will lead the board and advise Morris and the senior leadership team on strategy and operations. Kim Fennebresque, previously board chair, became Lead Independent Director when Whitman took the role; the board grew from 10 members to 11. Albertsons’ September 9 announcement describes Whitman’s remit as including strategy, execution, profitable growth, AI-related operating structure, and a more consistent experience across stores and digital channels. Those are stated priorities, not evidence that the company has already changed its strategy or improved performance.
What changes in the boardroom?
Albertsons announced that Bill Boltz, Chris Drumgoole, and Meg Ham would join the board effective October 14, 2026. As of October 4, they were incoming directors, not yet serving. Their appointments are expected to expand the board from 11 to 14 members. The company associated Boltz with merchandising and omnichannel retail, Drumgoole with technology and AI, and Ham with grocery leadership and customer-focused transformation. The company’s announcement presents these backgrounds as additions to board expertise; it does not establish what decisions the new directors will make or what results their appointments will produce.
What has actually changed in operations?
The clearest operational changes in the available announcements are assignments of executive responsibility, rather than documented store-level changes. In May 2025, Albertsons said Omer Gajial, then EVP and Chief Merchandising & Digital Officer, would leave. Michelle Larson moved from West operations to EVP, Chief Merchandising Officer, taking responsibility for own brands, merchandising strategy, pricing and promotion, space planning, fuel, and commission income. Jennifer Saenz became EVP, Chief Commercial Officer, with pharmacy and ecommerce operations as well as digital experiences, marketing and loyalty, and Albertsons Media Collective. Anuj Dhanda’s technology and transformation remit expanded to include Data Science and Product Management, while Mike Withers took an expanded West operations role. Albertsons framed the reorganization as support for its “Customers for Life” strategy.

The 2026 Executive Chair announcement adds an oversight and advisory layer to that structure: Whitman is to work with Morris on areas including operating structure, AI technologies, and customer experience across physical and digital channels. The announcements do not document specific technology deployments, store changes, workforce effects, or cost savings. Executive assignments and stated goals alone cannot establish those outcomes.
What does the CFO transition mean for shareholders?
Cody Perdue became Interim CFO effective September 30, 2026, succeeding Sharon McCollam, who announced plans to retire as President and CFO. Perdue retains oversight of treasury, investor relations, and risk management while serving as interim finance chief. Albertsons said McCollam would advise through February 27, 2027, to support continuity during the transition, and that a permanent CFO search was underway. The company’s announcement establishes the transition arrangements, not the eventual choice of permanent CFO or any effect on financial results.

For shareholders, the changes are relevant to board oversight, management succession, and finance continuity. They do not, on the evidence available, show a change in financial forecasts, dividend or repurchase policy, valuation, or share-price performance. The timing of a leadership change is not proof that it caused a financial outcome. To assess the business itself, shareholders should compare company-reported results and guidance in subsequent filings with prior periods, separately from the stated aims of the new leadership structure.

The current structure follows an earlier CEO transition. Vivek Sankaran notified the board on February 27, 2025, of his decision to retire as CEO and director effective May 1, 2025. Albertsons appointed then-COO Susan Morris as successor under its succession plan. The company’s SEC filing said Sankaran’s retirement was not the result of disagreement about company operations, policies, or practices. The filing documents the succession and its stated circumstances.

In sequence, the announcements show a CEO succession and operating leadership reorganization in 2025, followed by a new Executive Chair role, a temporary CFO transition, and three announced future board appointments in 2026. They indicate how Albertsons intends to organize oversight and leadership; whether that arrangement improves execution, growth, or customer experience must be judged from later operating and financial results, not inferred from appointments.
