Yes. Equinix disclosed ransomware on some of its internal systems on September 9, 2020. The company said its data centers, managed services and customer operations remained operational; it did not report an interruption to customer equipment housed in its facilities. This is a report about the 2020 incident, not evidence of a new 2026 attack.

What happened in the Equinix ransomware incident?

On September 9, 2020, Equinix said it was investigating ransomware affecting some internal systems. The company said it took immediate action, notified law enforcement and was investigating with its teams. In a later filing, Equinix described the incident as ransomware that encrypted files and held them for ransom.

Equinix’s initial statement distinguished its internal systems from its customer-facing infrastructure: “Our data centers and our service offerings, including managed services, remain fully operational, and the incident has not affected our ability to support our customers.” That was the company’s contemporaneous description of the incident.

Were Equinix data centers or customer services affected?

Equinix said they were not. Its September 9 statement said data centers and service offerings, including managed services, remained operational, with no impact on customer operations or on data stored on customer equipment in Equinix facilities. A September 16 Form 8-K said the company was containing the incident and restoring internal systems while its data centers and service offerings remained operational.

This distinction matters: the reported ransomware affected some Equinix internal systems, while Equinix said the data-center services customers relied on continued operating. These statements describe the company’s reports, not an independent forensic verification.

What information did Equinix say was accessed?

In an October 28, 2020 update, Equinix said it had closed its investigation on October 14. The company reported that information accessed without authorization included internal references to customers, but did not contain sensitive information about customer operations or other material customer information. Equinix also said its data centers and services were not affected.

A 2021 filing said the incident caused no material disruption or material costs to the company. Equinix’s account does not identify an attacker, ransomware family, entry method, ransom demand, or the number of systems or files affected; the cited company materials also do not provide an independent forensic report.

Does Equinix report a new ransomware attack in 2026?

The 2020 incident should not be presented as a newly discovered attack. Equinix’s 2026 filing identifies cyberattacks, ransomware and unauthorized access as ongoing risks; that is general risk disclosure, not a report that the 2020 incident recurred. Equinix’s current security page describes physical data-center protections such as checkpoints, manned security stations, mantraps and biometric readers. Those measures concern physical access and do not explain or establish a response to the 2020 internal-systems incident.
