Walmart’s Digital-Banking Venture: From the 2021 Ribbit Announcement to OnePay

Walmart announced a fintech venture with Ribbit Capital in 2021—not a Walmart-owned bank. Here is how it became OnePay, what it offers in 2026, how partner-bank FDIC coverage works, and who may benefit.

Walmart did not launch a Walmart-owned bank on January 11, 2021. It announced a fintech venture with Ribbit Capital to develop affordable financial products for Walmart customers and associates. That venture later operated as Hazel, acquired Even and ONE, and evolved into today’s OnePay ecosystem. OnePay is a financial-technology company; qualifying deposits are held by partner banks, currently Coastal Community Bank or Lead Bank, both Members FDIC.

What Walmart announced on January 11, 2021

Walmart and Ribbit Capital said they were creating a new, independently managed fintech venture to build “modern, innovative and affordable” financial products for Walmart customers and employees. Walmart brought retail reach, customer relationships, employee access and consumer insight. Ribbit, an investment firm associated with companies including Robinhood, Credit Karma and Affirm, brought fintech investment and industry experience.

The announcement at Walmart’s corporate site was a strategic announcement, not a product launch. It did not name a checking account, disclose an APY or complete fee schedule, set a launch date, identify the eventual sponsor banks or say Walmart itself would become a chartered bank.

How the venture became OnePay

Earlier Walmart financial-services work

Walmart already offered money transfers, bill payment, cash services, prepaid and deposit-account products and credit-related services. In 2019, Walmart and Green Dot extended their relationship and formed TailFin Labs, a fintech accelerator focused on retail and consumer financial services. That history helps explain why Walmart pursued a platform that could connect stores, digital channels, payments, rewards, payroll and credit.

Hazel, Even and ONE

On January 26, 2022, the venture, then operating as Hazel, announced agreements to acquire Even and ONE. ONE supplied a digital platform combining spending, saving and borrowing. Even contributed earned-wage access and budgeting services. The transaction gave the venture a consumer product foundation rather than the broad, unspecified mandate described in 2021.

See the announcement at Hazel announces definitive merger agreements with Even and ONE.

Separate MoneyCard development

Walmart’s June 2021 announcement that its MoneyCard, issued by Green Dot Bank, would be offered as a demand-deposit account was a separate product development. It should not be treated as the Ribbit venture or as proof that Walmart itself held deposits. Details are in Walmart’s MoneyCard announcement.

The Synchrony announcement is at OnePay’s newsroom.

Is OnePay a bank?

No. OnePay says it is a fintech company, not a bank. Its deposit account is provided through Coastal Community Bank or Lead Bank, both Members FDIC. The specific partner assigned to an account may vary; OnePay says customers can see the relevant bank in the app’s account settings. The partner bank, rather than Walmart, is the bank holding the deposit relationship described in the account agreement.

Read OnePay’s explanation at About OnePay banking and its legal disclosures at OnePay legal.

How FDIC insurance applies

OnePay says approved deposit accounts may receive pass-through FDIC insurance up to $250,000 per depositor, subject to FDIC rules, account titling and other conditions. The protection applies if the insured partner bank fails; it is not insurance against every possible failure of OnePay as a fintech.

Who may benefit—and who may not

Potentially good fit

  • Walmart shoppers who regularly need convenient cash deposits or withdrawals.
  • People who want savings automation, early-pay features or shopping-linked rewards in one app.
  • Customers interested in secured credit or credit-building products who will review those products separately.

Potentially poor fit

  • Anyone needing joint accounts or authorized signers; OnePay’s help center says it does not currently offer them.
  • People who rely on branches, broad non-Walmart support or a single long-established bank relationship.
  • Savers seeking an unrestricted high-yield rate rather than a conditional, capped APY.
  • Consumers who rarely shop at Walmart and gain little from retailer-specific rewards.
  • Anyone unwilling to manage fintech, sponsor-bank, identity-verification or account-freeze procedures.

How to compare OnePay with alternatives

There is no universal winner. Compare the account against the service you actually need:

Alternative Why it may be preferable What to compare
Traditional branch bank Branches, established support and broader account services Monthly fees, branch access, ATM network and rates
Online high-yield bank Potentially stronger savings focus and conventional bank relationship APY conditions, transfer speed, cash access and insurance structure
Neobank Mobile-first tools and automated money management Partner-bank disclosures, support, limits and fees
Employer or payroll-linked account Early-pay or wage-access integration Employer eligibility and withdrawal costs
Walmart MoneyCard Separate Walmart-branded Green Dot product line Current terms, fees and features; do not assume they match OnePay

For comparison starting points, see Ally Bank, Capital One Bank, Chime or a local credit union. Verify each provider’s current terms independently.

Questions to answer before opening an account

  1. Which partner bank will hold my deposit?
  2. Which balances qualify for FDIC pass-through insurance, and how are they titled?
  3. Do I qualify for the advertised savings APY, and what balance cap applies?
  4. How much will my usual cash withdrawals, instant transfers and deposits cost?
  5. Are Walmart locations and Allpoint ATMs convenient for my routine?
  6. Do I need joint ownership, authorized users, branches or services OnePay does not offer?
  7. For any card, loan, BNPL, investment or crypto product, what are the separate APRs, fees, risks and eligibility rules?

The Bottom Line

Walmart’s 2021 announcement was the starting point for a fintech strategy, not the launch of a Walmart bank. OnePay is now a Walmart-connected financial app whose qualifying deposits sit at partner banks. It may suit Walmart-centered customers who value in-store cash access and integrated rewards, but it should be evaluated on its conditional rates, transaction fees, product-specific risks and sponsor-bank structure—not marketed as a full-service Walmart-owned bank.
