Walmart Canada really did advertise an unlocked 512GB iPhone 13 mini for CAD$499, compared with a listed regular price of CAD$1,359. That is an exact saving of CAD$860, or about 63.3%, which explains the “almost $900 off” headline. However, the Walmart Big Save promotion ran only from July 4 through July 10, 2024. It is not a current CAD$499 deal as of August 18, 2026.
The original promotion was reported by MobileSyrup and applied specifically to the 512GB configuration sold through Walmart.ca.

“Almost $900 off” was rounded language, not the exact saving. The arithmetic is CAD$1,359 minus CAD$499, or CAD$860. The CAD$1,359 figure was the promotion’s listed comparison price; it should not be treated as a universal Canadian market price.
What buyers got for CAD$499
According to Walmart’s product information, the phone had a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR display, Apple’s A15 Bionic chip, dual 12-megapixel Wide and Ultra Wide rear cameras, a 12-megapixel TrueDepth front camera, 5G, MagSafe support and an unlocked, no-plan configuration. Walmart listed battery performance as up to 17 hours of video playback.

The 5G experience depends on the carrier, plan, network bands and location. MagSafe accessories were sold separately. Walmart also noted that the phone’s IP68 water resistance was measured under controlled conditions, can decline with normal wear and does not make liquid damage automatically covered.
Why the discount looked so dramatic
512GB storage drove much of the headline
This was not a discount on every iPhone 13 mini storage tier. It was specifically the 512GB model. That unusually large capacity made CAD$499 exceptionally attractive for people who keep extensive photos, videos, games or offline media. Buyers who would be comfortable with less storage should compare the phone with lower-capacity devices rather than assume the same percentage saving applied across the range.
A rare compact iPhone
The iPhone 13 mini offered a genuinely small 5.4-inch design, making it easier to use one-handed and carry in a small pocket. For shoppers who specifically wanted a compact iPhone, an unlocked 512GB model at CAD$499 was a strong storage-per-dollar proposition.

It was still an older phone
The iPhone 13 mini launched in 2021 and was almost three years old when this promotion ran. Its smaller body also means a smaller battery and screen than larger iPhones. Newer models may provide better battery endurance, camera hardware, processing performance and remaining software-support runway. The deal was compelling for the right compact-phone buyer, not automatically the best value for everyone.
Was it a good buy?
At CAD$499 for a new, unlocked 512GB unit, the promotion was genuinely aggressive. It made the most sense if you wanted:
- the smallest recent iPhone form factor;
- 512GB of storage;
- an unlocked phone without a carrier contract; or
- Apple’s camera, software and accessory ecosystem.
It was less compelling if your priorities were maximum battery life, a large display, the newest cameras or the longest possible support horizon. The phone’s age, compact battery and the possibility of newer alternatives should be part of the comparison. Taxes, shipping and limited inventory also affected the final cost.

Is the Walmart deal still available?
No. The reported Big Save promotion ended July 10, 2024. Walmart’s indexed pages now show a mixture of out-of-stock Walmart-sold listings and separate marketplace offers rather than confirmation of the original CAD$499 promotion.
The black 512GB product page has appeared with a Walmart-sold price of CAD$647 and an out-of-stock status. Another red 512GB page shows the CAD$1,359 reference price and is also out of stock. These indexed prices and statuses are volatile and should not be read as a live offer.
Walmart’s marketplace has also indexed an open-box 512GB listing at CAD$475.99 and a refurbished 512GB listing. Neither is equivalent to the original new-phone promotion. Condition, seller, battery health, warranty and returns must be checked separately at checkout.

Checklist for evaluating a remaining listing
If you find an iPhone 13 mini listing that resembles the old deal, verify all of the following before paying:
- Condition: Confirm whether it is new, open-box or refurbished.
- Seller and shipping party: Marketplace sellers can have different policies from Walmart.
- Storage and model: Make sure it is the 512GB version and identify the model number.
- Unlock status: Confirm it is fully unlocked and compatible with your Canadian carrier’s SIM, eSIM, LTE and 5G requirements.
- Battery: Look for a battery-health disclosure or guarantee. A sealed older phone can still have a battery that aged in storage.
- Warranty and returns: Check who provides the warranty, the return period and any restocking conditions.
- Included items: Verify whether the original packaging, cable and accessories are included.
- Final checkout total: Recheck the price, shipping, taxes and delivery availability for your postal code.
Common problems with old or marketplace listings
A page shows CAD$499 but checkout fails
The promotion may have ended, inventory may be gone, a different colour or storage tier may be selected, or the page may have changed to a marketplace seller. Cached or indexed prices can also lag behind the checkout page. The cart is the authoritative place to confirm the final price and seller.
“Unlocked” does not guarantee carrier compatibility
Check SIM and eSIM support, network bands, activation status and whether the device is reported lost or stolen. Activate the phone before transferring your number and use the return window if it does not work as promised.

Battery life is disappointing
Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging as soon as you receive the phone. If capacity or performance is materially below the listing’s promise, document it and use the return process.
Water resistance is treated as insurance
IP68 is a laboratory rating, not an unlimited guarantee. Resistance can diminish with wear, and Walmart warns against charging a wet device. Liquid damage is not automatically covered.
How to think about the “regular price”
The CAD$1,359 number explains the promotion’s percentage discount, but it does not establish that every retailer valued the phone at exactly that amount. Real-world value depends on the model’s age, condition, battery health, warranty and the prices of newer phones or professionally refurbished alternatives.
What to buy instead in 2026
For a current iPhone with direct manufacturer support and a new-device warranty, compare models available through Apple Canada’s iPhone store. Apple is unlikely to be the cheapest source for a discontinued iPhone 13 mini, but it provides a useful benchmark for current hardware and support.

If compact size matters most, a reputable refurbished or open-box iPhone 13 mini can still make sense when its battery guarantee, seller, warranty and return policy are clear. If the price approaches that of a newer iPhone, compare the newer phone instead of relying on the old “almost $900 off” headline.

Walmart Canada’s promotion was real, but it was a time-limited July 2024 offer for one specific configuration: an unlocked 512GB iPhone 13 mini. CAD$499 against Walmart’s listed CAD$1,359 price meant an exact CAD$860 saving. In 2026, treat any remaining Walmart listing as a separate transaction and verify condition, seller, battery, warranty, compatibility and checkout price before buying.
