His career included building a nationally recognizable cookie business, losing the company and the rights to use his name, launching later food ventures, and spending decades supporting literacy.
How Wally Amos created Famous Amos
Amos was born in Tallahassee, Florida, and moved to New York City at age 12 to live with his aunt, Della Bryant, who taught him to bake chocolate chip cookies. After leaving high school, he served in the Air Force. He later worked at the William Morris Agency, where the Smithsonian says he became its first African American talent agent and represented musical acts.
In March 1975, Amos opened his first cookie shop in Los Angeles. He used a family recipe to sell bite-size chocolate chip cookies and made himself part of the brand’s public identity. The Smithsonian’s Famous Amos Collection finding aid preserves business records, packaging, marketing materials, photographs, correspondence and literacy materials from his career.
What happened to the Famous Amos company and its name?
Financial difficulties led Amos to sell the company and its trademarked name in 1985, according to the Smithsonian finding aid. The Associated Press describes the outcome as a loss of both ownership and the right to use his name. The business’s later ownership and products should not be confused with Amos’s original company or his subsequent ventures.

The loss had a personal dimension. His son Shawn Amos told the AP that his father’s later professional pursuits were attempts to reclaim that space. His daughter Sarah said he did not want to remain only the face of a company. Amos also told the AP in 2007, “Being famous is highly overrated anyway.”
What Amos did after Famous Amos
Amos continued working in food businesses after losing control of Famous Amos. He was associated with Chip & Cookie, a shop in Hawaii, and co-founded a muffin business that began as Uncle Noname and later became Uncle Wally’s Muffin Company. Accounts differ on when the original Uncle Noname business began, so a precise founding year is not established here.

His later work was not limited to food. Beginning in 1979, Amos supported child and adult literacy, working with Literacy Volunteers of America and libraries and hosting the television series Learn to Read, according to the Smithsonian. In 1991, President George H.W. Bush presented him with the National Literacy Award. CBS quoted Bush as saying: “Your greatest contribution to your country is not your signature straw hat in the Smithsonian, but the people you have inspired to learn to read.”
