Cooler Screens’ $200 million figure was the amount it sought in a contract lawsuit against Walgreens—not a confirmed payment, court award, or established loss. The dispute grew out of a retail-media experiment: digital screens built into cooler and freezer doors that showed product imagery and information alongside paid advertising.

What were Walgreens’ digital freezer doors?

Cooler Screens developed digital doors for refrigerated and frozen-product cases. Their displays were designed to show shoppers images and information about products behind the glass, as well as advertisements. Walgreens became an early retail customer, turning normally static cooler-door space into a potential merchandising and advertising channel.

The idea offered a trade-off. Digital displays might help shoppers see product options and give retailers a new advertising business, but they also introduced screens, connectivity, maintenance, and vendor-managed infrastructure into an everyday part of the store. The available reporting describes the intended functions and the contract dispute, not a controlled study showing whether the screens improved sales or shopper experience.

How many screens were installed?

Published figures describe different stages or scopes of the rollout, so they should not be treated as one verified final inventory.

Why did Walgreens and Cooler Screens end up in court?

Cooler Screens sued Walgreens for breach of contract in June 2023 and sought $200 million in damages. Later coverage said Walgreens wanted to exit the agreement and remove the equipment, and reported that Walgreens also countersued. The $200 million was Cooler Screens’ claimed damages—not evidence that Walgreens paid that amount or that a court awarded it. Supermarket News/Winsight Grocery Business, 2023; Fortune, 2025

What happened during the reported screen outage?

In coverage of the dispute published in January 2025, Walgreens’ legal account alleged that Cooler Screens cut data feeds to more than 100 Chicago-area stores in December 2023, leaving displays blank during the holiday season. Reports said Walgreens sought court relief and that the feeds were restored. These were reported allegations and events, not a final judicial finding.

Cooler Screens CEO Arsen Avakian reportedly said the company acted to get Walgreens to respond about overdue maintenance and internet invoices. Were the screens removed, and was the $200 million paid?

Reports described Walgreens as saying the Cooler Screens doors had been removed. The available coverage does not establish that removal was complete in every affected store, how many doors remained in service, or the dispute’s final litigation outcome after the January 2025 accounts. It likewise does not substantiate a $200 million payment or judgment.
