Voyager Capital announced that it had closed a $100 million fifth fund on October 8, 2019. The fund was designed for first-round investments in early-stage B2B startups in Washington, Oregon and Western Canada—not a new fundraise in 2026. GeekWire reported that Voyager planned to back 15–20 companies and was ending investments in California.
What was Voyager Capital’s fifth fund?
The fund was Voyager Capital’s fifth venture fund. The firm said the $100 million would support first-round investments in B2B startups across Washington, Oregon and Western Canada, which it called Cascadia. At the time of the announcement, Voyager said five investments had already closed. Voyager Capital’s October 8, 2019 announcement described the fund as a way to invest in the region’s early-stage businesses.
GeekWire reported that Voyager intended to make 15–20 investments from the fund. That was a reported target, not a final count of companies backed.
Where and in what sectors did it plan to invest?
Geography
The 2019 plan covered Washington, Oregon and Western Canada. Voyager was narrowing its geographic focus to the Pacific Northwest and Cascadia rather than continuing to invest in California.

2019 sector thesis
Voyager’s announcement named cloud infrastructure and software as a service (SaaS), alongside vertical markets including FinTech, MediaTech and AgTech. These were the sectors identified in the fifth-fund announcement; they should not be read as an exhaustive account of every investment the fund ultimately made.
Why did Voyager shift its focus away from California?
GeekWire reported that Voyager reached the decision after reviewing results from its third and fourth funds. The firm’s stated view was that its Pacific Northwest investments had outperformed its California investments. Bill McAleer, Voyager’s founder and managing director, said, “it was totally clear that we outperformed in the Pacific Northwest over California,” and added, “Our focus on this region is pretty intense.” Those are Voyager’s explanations, not an independently verified comparison of investment performance.

Voyager also framed the region as an opportunity to invest in a growing but relatively underserved startup market. Managing director Diane Fraiman said, “Cascadia is exploding with growth but underserved by venture capital.” That statement, like the firm’s performance rationale, reflects Voyager’s view in 2019 rather than an independent finding.
How did the 2019 fund thesis differ from Voyager’s current positioning?
Voyager’s current website describes its focus in different terms: AI-driven business solutions, software-driven hardware, sustainable agriculture and supply chain, in the Pacific Northwest and Western Canada. The contrast is best understood as a change in the firm’s public sector language over time, not proof that it abandoned any of the 2019 categories.

What performance claims accompanied the announcement?
Voyager said it had recorded 14 exits over the four years before its October 2019 announcement. That is a company-reported figure in a fund announcement, not an independent assessment of returns or fund performance. The announcement and GeekWire’s reporting do not establish a statistical comparison of Voyager’s Pacific Northwest and California results.
