Vimeo appointed Philip Moyer as chief executive officer and a board member on April 4, 2024, with the change taking effect April 8. Moyer came from Google Cloud, where he was Global Vice President of Applied AI Engineering and Business Development and Vice President of Strategic Industries. The appointment was a 2024 leadership event; after Vimeo’s acquisition by Bending Spoons in November 2025, Moyer should not be described as the company’s current CEO.
What happened at Vimeo
Vimeo announced Moyer’s appointment on April 4, 2024. He formally became CEO on April 8 and joined Vimeo’s board. The company’s interim CEO, Adam Gross, left the operating role but remained on the board at that time. Moyer did not directly replace Anjali Sud: Sud had already left the CEO position before Gross’s interim tenure.
The legal announcement is recorded in Vimeo’s investor release and its SEC Form 8-K.

Who Philip Moyer is
Moyer was a senior Google Cloud executive, not the head of Google’s entire AI organization or a Google DeepMind research chief. From July 2019 until joining Vimeo, his Google Cloud responsibilities covered applied-AI engineering, business development and strategic industries.

The company’s detailed biography appears in its official appointment announcement. His background combined cloud platforms, applied AI, enterprise sales and operating experience—different from the profile of a model researcher.

Why Vimeo selected an applied-AI and enterprise executive
Vimeo said Moyer could extend its innovation into “AI-powered video” and make the platform a more strategic partner for businesses and creators. That rationale matched Vimeo’s 2024 positioning around professional video rather than a pure consumer social network.
The company was targeting organizations and professional teams that needed to create, host, manage, distribute and measure video. In that context, Moyer’s cloud and business-development experience was relevant to building enterprise partnerships and embedding AI into existing workflows. It is a strategic interpretation of the appointment, not evidence that the board hired him for a single undisclosed project.

Vimeo’s enterprise and creator focus
- Centralized video hosting and management for companies and teams.
- Tools for professional creators and marketing departments.
- Distribution and measurement across multiple channels.
- Workflow features intended to reduce the work required to repurpose existing video.
What “AI video” meant at Vimeo
Vimeo’s AI direction was primarily about assisting professional video workflows. Company materials associated with 2024 described capabilities such as automated transcription, captioning, summaries, social-clip generation and translation into more than 28 languages. These capabilities were introduced over time and should not be read as all launching on Moyer’s first day.
In an August 2024 Axios interview, Moyer framed the opportunity around professional creators and corporate marketing departments. He discussed making it easier to store, customize, distribute and repurpose uploaded video, including sending material to Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and podcasting channels. That approach emphasized workflow efficiency over competing directly with consumer-facing text-to-video model providers.

Vimeo’s position on creator content and AI training
Moyer’s public communications paired enthusiasm for AI assistance with limits around creator control. Vimeo said in April 2024 that it had not trained generative-AI models on hosted content at that time. In a May 2024 policy statement, the company said generative-AI models would not be allowed to train on Vimeo-hosted videos without the user’s explicit consent, including users on free offerings. The policy is described in Vimeo’s position on AI and an earlier message to Vimeo users.
This was a consent rule for training generative-AI models, not a promise that every form of automated processing or every AI-powered feature was prohibited. Buyers still need to review the terms and controls attached to their specific account and product.

What happened after Moyer’s appointment
Vimeo agreed in September 2025 to be acquired by Bending Spoons for $7.85 in cash per share, valuing the transaction at approximately $1.38 billion. Vimeo said the offer represented a 91% premium to its 60-day volume-weighted average share price as of September 9, 2025. The transaction closed on November 24, 2025, when Vimeo became a privately held, wholly owned subsidiary of Bending Spoons US and was delisted from Nasdaq. The closing details are in the SEC filing; the announced terms are in Vimeo’s transaction release.
In March 2026, Vimeo’s public blog identified Marco Castello as the company’s “new lead.” That later ownership and leadership change means the accurate present-tense description is that Moyer was appointed CEO in April 2024, not that he remains Vimeo’s CEO in 2026. Public sources do not establish a definitive success or failure verdict for his tenure.
What the appointment signaled
The choice of Moyer connected Vimeo’s video platform to the enterprise-cloud and applied-AI market. Vimeo was betting that AI would make professional video easier to create, organize, localize and distribute while preserving customer control over hosted content. The subsequent acquisition created a new corporate and leadership phase, so the appointment is best understood as a dated step in Vimeo’s strategy rather than a description of its current ownership.
