A veterinary specialty-clinic employee’s account, as summarized by Cheezburger/Memebase, says a promised raise instead left her earning $12,000 less per year and $488 less per paycheck. Those figures are claims in a viral story, not verified payroll arithmetic: the original Reddit post has been deleted, and the published account does not give the old and new compensation terms or pay schedule.
What the account says happened
Cheezburger/Memebase published Emmy Pratt’s account on April 6, 2026, attributing it to a Reddit user in r/antiwork. The post was titled “Told I was getting a raise, got a $12k paycut instead.” The publisher describes the employee as a veterinarian at a specialty clinic who also handled receptionist duties, and says she tried to object to being overworked, overscheduled and underpaid.
The story also says the employee had few benefits and feared that local opportunities to continue her specialization were limited. The original Reddit post has since been deleted, so readers cannot review the firsthand account on its original page. The publisher’s image captions say the image is representative and does not depict the people involved. The account is therefore best understood as a report of what the employee said, not independent verification of the employment dispute. Cheezburger/Memebase’s article; the Reddit post.
Why the $12,000 and $488 figures cannot be confirmed
The publisher’s headline says each paycheck was $488 lower, while the Reddit post title and article framing refer to a $12,000 annual pay cut. The available account does not specify the pay frequency, the employee’s former and revised base salary, or how production-based compensation factored into total earnings. Without those details, it is not possible to check whether the per-paycheck and annual figures match.
#1 Best Overall
Comments on the Reddit post reportedly discuss compensation partly based on production and how changes to base salary or production pay might affect total income. That discussion does not supply verified pay terms or establish the employee’s actual loss. The figures should remain attributed claims rather than be treated as confirmed payroll calculations.
What readers can take from the story—and what they cannot
The account describes a worker who felt underpaid and overextended while balancing veterinary and reception duties, and who believed her options nearby were constrained. It does not establish the employer’s identity, the employee’s exact location, whether a law was broken, or whether wage theft occurred. Anonymous commenters offered differing views about negotiating, changing clinics or staying, but those reactions are not professional career or legal advice.

- Compare the written offer, compensation plan or change notice with your pay statements. Check the effective date, salary or hourly rate, production formula, deductions and pay period.
- Ask payroll or your manager for an itemized explanation of the change, including how any production-based component was calculated.
- Keep copies of relevant written terms and pay records. If the explanation does not resolve the discrepancy, seek guidance from an appropriate labor agency or qualified adviser in your jurisdiction.
