Verizon Layoffs: What the 13,000+ Job Cuts Mean and What Workers Can Do

Verizon announced on November 20, 2025, that it would cut more than 13,000 employees. A later March 2026 letter from U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren described the reduction as approximately 15,000 workers, citing media reports. The available information confirms that 2025 reduction, not a new layoff wave underway on October 3, 2026.

If you are affected, start with your separation documents, then check whether federal or state notice rules apply and contact your state’s workforce transition services. Verizon also announced a career-transition fund, but workers should confirm current eligibility and services directly with the company.

What Verizon announced—and what the job-cut figures mean

Verizon’s November 20, 2025 announcement said it would reduce its workforce by more than 13,000 employees across the organization and reduce outsourced and other outside labor expenses. The Associated Press also reported more than 13,000 cuts beginning that day; it said a Verizon spokesperson characterized them as about 20% of the company’s management workforce. These are two distinct figures: the 20% description concerned management, not Verizon’s total workforce.

The approximately 15,000 figure is a later characterization, not the number Verizon used in its announcement. A March 15, 2026 letter from Senator Elizabeth Warren described the planned cuts as approximately 15,000 workers, or about 15% of Verizon’s workforce, citing Wall Street Journal reports. The sources establish the November 2025 announcement and action, but do not establish that a further round is occurring now.

Verizon said the changes were intended to simplify operations, address complexity and friction, and better align resources around customer value. That is the company’s stated rationale, not an independent finding about why the cuts were made. CEO Dan Schulman wrote, “We must reorient our entire company around delivering for and delighting our customers.”

What to do if you were laid off from Verizon

1. Review your separation documents

Read your separation notice and any documents covering severance, benefits, equity, or internal placement. Keep copies and note any deadlines for signing, elections, appeals, or returning company property. The announced workforce reduction does not establish an individual employee’s terms; those depend on the documents and circumstances applicable to that worker.

2. Check whether notice requirements apply

The federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act generally requires covered employers to provide at least 60 calendar days’ written notice for qualifying plant closings and mass layoffs. Coverage conditions and exceptions apply, and state laws may add different or broader requirements. A large companywide layoff does not by itself determine whether a particular worker or worksite was entitled to WARN notice. Review the U.S. Department of Labor’s WARN guidance and contact the relevant state workforce agency if you have questions about your situation.

3. Contact your state’s Rapid Response team

The Department of Labor says local Rapid Response and dislocated-worker services may include job-search assistance, training support, and related transition help. Services and availability vary by location. Find information through the Department of Labor’s layoff and Rapid Response resources or your state workforce agency.

4. Check Verizon’s transition fund and current openings

Verizon announced a $20 million Reskilling and Career Transition Fund for departing employees, focused on skill development, digital training, and job placement. The announcement does not specify current access, eligibility, application steps, or what any individual will receive. Contact Verizon to verify whether the fund is available to you and what it currently offers.

If you want to pursue another role at the company, search Verizon’s careers page and confirm details directly. Listings can change, and an open position does not guarantee eligibility for an internal transfer.

What the available information does not settle

The announcement and public resources do not determine whether an individual qualifies for severance, continued benefits, unemployment compensation, or WARN notice. Those outcomes can depend on location, worksite, employment status, service history, plan documents, and separation terms. For a personal determination, consult the relevant plan administrator, state agency, or qualified adviser rather than relying on the headline figure.
