Yes. You can add an eligible Venmo Debit Card or Venmo Credit Card to Apple Wallet and use it with Apple Pay. You add the card—not your Venmo account or balance by itself. On iPhone, open Wallet, tap the plus button, choose Debit or Credit Card, then follow the prompts and any verification requested by Venmo or the card issuer.

Which Venmo cards work with Apple Pay?

Venmo confirms that both its Venmo Mastercard Debit Card and Venmo Credit Card can be added to Apple Pay. The debit card draws on the Venmo account balance; the credit card is a separate credit product issued by Synchrony Bank under a Visa license.

A Venmo account or app alone is not an Apple Pay payment card. To pay with Apple Pay using Venmo, you need an eligible Venmo card. Adding one card does not combine it with the other or change whether a purchase is a debit or credit transaction.

How to add a Venmo card to iPhone

  1. Open the Wallet app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the + button, then choose Debit or Credit Card and tap Continue.
  3. Scan the card, hold it near your iPhone if prompted, or choose Enter Card Details Manually.
  4. Enter or confirm the requested card information.
  5. Complete any verification steps requested by Venmo or the card issuer. Once approved, the card will appear in Wallet.

These are Apple’s current enrollment steps; Venmo also directs cardholders to add a card through Wallet. See Apple’s Apple Pay setup instructions and Venmo’s Apple Pay page.

  • This item is not eligible for refund, resale, or return. Available for sale within the United States only. Not available to residents of Puerto Rico, Hawaii, New Mexico, South Dakota, West Virginia and the US Virgin Islands.

Can you add it from the Venmo app?

If your Venmo card screen offers an Add to Apple Wallet button, you can follow that route. Venmo’s published instructions do not promise that every user will see an in-app shortcut. If you do not see one, add the card directly in Wallet. The exact issuer-app option can vary by card, device, and software version, as described in Apple’s iPhone Wallet guide.

How to add the card to Apple Watch

  1. On the paired iPhone, open the Watch app.
  2. Tap My Watch, then Wallet & Apple Pay.
  3. Tap Add Card.
  4. Select Debit or Credit Card or, if offered, Cards Found For You.
  5. Scan or enter the card details and complete any required verification.

Follow Apple’s Apple Watch setup instructions. A card on your iPhone generally must be provisioned separately to your Apple Watch.

How to pay and choose the default Venmo card

Pay at a contactless terminal

  • iPhone with Face ID: Double-click the side button, authenticate, then hold the top of the phone near the contactless reader.
  • iPhone with Touch ID: Authenticate with Touch ID and hold the device near the reader.
  • Apple Watch: Double-click the side button and hold the watch near the reader.

Apple Pay works at merchants that accept Apple Pay or contactless payments, subject to merchant, region, device, and issuer support. Apple says its payment process uses a device-specific representation of the card and does not give merchants the physical card number; see Apple’s Apple Pay overview.

Set a Venmo card as the default

Venmo says you can set one of your Venmo cards as the default payment method in Apple Wallet. The default controls which card Apple Pay presents automatically; it does not change the card’s underlying account, balance, credit limit, or rewards terms. Check the card name and last four digits shown in Wallet before paying, especially if you have both Venmo cards enrolled. See Venmo’s Apple Pay page.

Requirements before you start

Venmo account requirements and Apple Pay device requirements are separate. Meeting one set does not guarantee you will meet the other.

Venmo account and app

Venmo’s requirements page lists a U.S. location, a U.S.-based mobile number that can send and receive short-code texts, and an age of at least 18 or the age of majority in your state. It lists Venmo app version 7.38.2 or newer and iOS 17 or newer. Treat those as the requirements Venmo lists, not as Apple Pay’s universal minimums. See Venmo’s requirements.

Apple Pay device and account

Apple requires a compatible device and supported operating-system version, a supported card from a participating issuer, an Apple Account signed in to the device with two-factor authentication, and a device passcode or supported biometric security. Apple Pay availability and card support vary by country or region. Check Apple’s current setup requirements and troubleshooting guidance for your device and location.

  1. Open the Venmo app and go to the Cards tab.
  2. Look for Venmo Debit Card.
  3. Follow the application instructions. If the app says Get in Line, the card is not currently available to you.

See the Venmo Debit Card FAQ or the Venmo Debit Card page. Requesting a debit card is the relevant option if you want to spend a Venmo balance through Apple Pay; a balance by itself is not added to Wallet.

What to do if Apple Wallet will not add the card

Apple identifies enrollment errors such as Could Not Add Card, Invalid Card, and Card Device Limit. Apple does not approve or decline cards; if the issuer declines enrollment, contact the issuer. Try these checks in order:

  1. Confirm the card is active, unexpired, and not locked, replaced, or reported lost.
  2. Update iOS, watchOS, and the Venmo app, then check Apple’s device, region, passcode, and Apple Account two-factor authentication requirements.
  3. Restart the device and try again. If scanning fails, choose manual entry.
  4. If the message is about a device limit, remove an old or duplicate version of the card from an Apple device you no longer use.
  5. If enrollment still fails, contact Venmo or the relevant card issuer. For Apple Pay service or device issues, consult Apple’s card-add troubleshooting guide.

Venmo card versus Venmo Tap to Pay

Adding a Venmo card to Apple Wallet is for making payments. Venmo’s Tap to Pay on iPhone is a separate feature that lets eligible business profiles accept contactless payments; it does not add a Venmo account or card as an Apple Pay funding source.

Rewards and fees still follow the card terms

Using a Venmo card through Apple Pay does not create separate rewards or change the card’s terms. Venmo advertises rewards that can be “up to” 3% on its credit card and “up to” 5% on certain debit-card offers; eligibility, categories, offers, and redemption conditions apply, so check the current terms on Venmo’s Apple Pay page. Venmo’s credit-card help page states that the card has no annual fee, but that does not mean there is no interest, late fee, or other possible charge; review the current credit-card terms.
