Valve’s Steam Machine began shipping to its first customers on June 29, 2026. In the US, the 512GB model is priced at $1,049 and the 2TB model at $1,349; adding a Steam Controller raises those totals to $1,128 and $1,428. Reservations were assigned by lottery after a June 25 cutoff, and Valve said fulfillment could continue through the rest of 2026. The cutoff has passed, so check the Steam storefront for current stock or any new buying options before budgeting for a purchase.
How much does the Steam Machine cost?
Valve’s US prices are $1,049 for the 512GB model and $1,349 for the 2TB model. The optional Steam Controller adds $79 to either configuration when purchased as a bundle. These are US-dollar prices; the information available does not establish whether taxes, shipping, or other checkout charges are included, so review the final storefront total before committing.
| Configuration | Storage | Faceplates included | Steam Controller included | US price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Machine | 512GB | Not stated | No | $1,049 |
| Steam Machine plus Steam Controller | 512GB | Not stated | Yes | $1,128 |
| Steam Machine | 2TB | Two exclusive faceplates | No | $1,349 |
| Steam Machine plus Steam Controller | 2TB | Two exclusive faceplates | Yes | $1,428 |
Which model is the better fit?
The 2TB model costs $300 more than the 512GB version and includes 1.5TB more storage as well as two exclusive faceplates. Both versions have upgradeable SSDs, according to Valve, so a buyer who prefers the lower entry price can start with 512GB and consider a storage upgrade later. That choice depends on the eventual cost and convenience of an upgrade; no upgrade pricing is established here.
The controller bundle adds $79 to either machine price. Choose it if you want the Steam Controller included in the same purchase; the bundle increment should not be treated as a confirmed standalone controller price.

Why is the price higher than Valve originally expected?
Valve attributed the higher-than-planned price to component costs and shortages, including costs secured over the preceding six months. The company said, “The overall effect is that our original goal for the price of Steam Machine is no longer viable.” Valve also said it would not subsidize the hardware, arguing that subsidized, closed ecosystems conflict with its view of an open PC platform. Tom’s Hardware reported that component shortages reduced the number of systems in the first production run.
When did the Steam Machine come out, and can you still reserve one?
Valve’s first shipment date was June 29, 2026. The company initially described the hardware as a 2026 release; the later announcement set the date for first shipments. Reservations were randomized after a June 25 cutoff, and Valve said fulfillment could continue through the rest of 2026 because supply was constrained.

For that reservation round, eligibility required a Steam account in good standing with a purchase made before April 27, 2026. Valve limited reservations to one per household. Tom’s Hardware reported that invited customers had 72 hours to complete checkout. Because those dates have passed, the available information does not establish that new reservations are open or that a machine is currently in stock. Check the official Steam storefront for the present status and final checkout terms.
Valve’s initial launch announcement listed the US, Canada, UK, EU, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. That announced market coverage is not confirmation of current local inventory or pricing. Check the storefront for your region rather than converting the US price: regional launch prices were reported in CAD, EUR, GBP, AUD, and PLN, but current local prices are not established here.

What hardware and software does it use?
The Steam Machine is a compact living-room PC running Linux-based SteamOS, rather than a traditional console with a closed game catalog. Ars Technica reported the following hardware specifications:
- A custom six-core AMD Zen 4 processor with speeds up to 4.8GHz.
- Integrated AMD RDNA 3 graphics with 28 compute units and 8GB of dedicated VRAM.
- 16GB of DDR5 system memory.
- 512GB or 2TB storage, depending on configuration.
Valve has confirmed that both the SSD and memory can be upgraded. It also said it plans to share faceplate CAD files, specifications, and details so customers and manufacturers can make their own. No specific third-party faceplate maker or current availability is established.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
What performance should buyers expect?
Valve’s GDC 2026 material described the Machine as offering six times Steam Deck performance and said all Deck Verified games are Machine Verified. Valve’s target for a Verified game is 30 frames per second at 1080p. These are Valve’s classifications and performance claims, not independent benchmark results for every game.
Valve said, “In our testing the majority of Steam titles play great at 4K 60 fps with FSR on Steam Machine.” FSR is AMD’s upscaling technology: the claim is about reaching a 4K output with upscaling, not a guarantee that every game renders natively at 4K or runs at 60 frames per second. Valve cautioned that some games need more upscaling and may be better played at a lower frame rate with variable refresh rate. If smooth performance matters more than resolution, those trade-offs are relevant when deciding whether the hardware suits your display and games.

Is the Steam Machine a console or a PC?
It is best understood as a small PC designed for the living room. SteamOS and access to a Steam library give it a console-like way to play games on a television, while its PC platform and upgradeable memory and SSD set it apart from a typical closed console. Buyers should compare the full $1,049 starting price with the console or PC they would otherwise buy, including any controller, storage, and regional checkout costs. The advantage is flexibility and Steam ecosystem access; the trade-off is that Valve’s 4K performance statement depends on upscaling and varies by game.
