You can try searching eBay with a photo in the eBay app: open Search, tap the camera or image-search control if it appears, and take or choose a picture. The control is not reliably available to every account or interface, though, so if you cannot find it, use Google Lens or Bing Visual Search to identify the item and then search eBay by its brand, model, or other identifying details.
How to search eBay by image in the app
eBay introduced Image Search and a separate share-to-eBay feature called Find It On eBay in 2017. Image Search was designed to use a phone photo or camera-roll image to find related listings; Find It On eBay let users share an image from elsewhere into eBay. That history does not mean the current control is available to everyone. eBay’s current buyer search help explains text search and filters but does not give a universal image-upload procedure.
When the image-search control is present, try this workflow. eBay says its app is available for iOS and Android and is regularly updated; update it before troubleshooting using eBay’s app guidance.
- Open the eBay app and go to the normal buyer Search area.
- Tap the search field and look for a camera, image, or visual-search icon.
- Choose the option to take a photo or select one from your camera roll or gallery. A share-to-eBay option may also be available where supported.
- Allow camera or photo-library access if your phone asks for permission.
- Frame or crop the image so the item you want is prominent, then submit it.
- Review the visually related results. Add useful words such as the brand or model and apply filters to narrow the listings.
Button names and placement can differ by app version, country, device, account, and eBay test. A result is a visual match, not proof that a listing shows the exact item, its condition, authenticity, size, or compatibility.

Can you search eBay by image on a computer?
On desktop, click inside eBay’s search box and look for a camera or image-search button. Community reports in 2026 describe desktop image-search testing or differences in visibility, but that is not an official promise of general availability. If the control is missing, eBay may not have enabled it for your browser, account, region, or current experience; changing browsers will not necessarily make it appear.
Do not confuse image upload with eBay’s Advanced Search. eBay documents that as text- and filter-based search, not as a place to upload a photo.

What to do if the image-search control is missing
First check whether you are in the buyer Search interface rather than a selling or listing workflow. Then work through these checks:
- Update the eBay app from your device’s app store.
- Check the phone’s settings to see whether eBay has the camera or photo-library permission needed for the action you want to take.
- Force-close and reopen the app; if needed, sign out and back in.
- Try both Wi-Fi and mobile data, then check the Search area again.
- If possible, try another device or browser. Availability can differ between experiences.
- If the control remains absent, use a visual-search alternative instead of assuming your phone is broken.
Missing controls have been a real availability issue: reporting has documented eBay disabling and later restoring mobile image search, while users have reported inconsistent visibility. See coverage of the mobile-app changes and the 2026 desktop test reports. These reports help explain variation but do not establish what every user should see today.

Use a visual-search alternative
Google Lens can help identify an object, find text on a label, or locate web pages with similar images. Bing Visual Search is another image-based search option for desktop and mobile. Neither is an eBay-inventory search: use the useful description, brand, or model it surfaces as keywords on eBay.
If the photo shows a readable barcode, barcode scanning may help identify a cataloged packaged product. That is different from visual image search: eBay describes barcode scanning as a seller-app shortcut for adding product details, not a general way to identify any photographed object. See eBay’s seller-app guidance.

How to get better image-search results
- Use one clearly visible item, not a crowded scene. Crop away faces, unrelated objects, and most of the background.
- Choose a sharp, well-lit, straight-on or useful three-quarter view. Try another angle if the first search misses.
- For a screenshot from a retailer page or social post, crop out captions, watermarks, logos, and other page elements where possible.
- Keep distinctive details in frame, including brand marks, model numbers, labels, logos, or unusual design features.
- If the image finds an accessory instead of the main product, crop more tightly around the product and add a keyword such as “main unit” or the model name.
Image matching can be guided by shape, color, and general appearance. A generic silhouette, unusual perspective, stock photo, or cluttered background can lead to lookalikes, accessories, replacement parts, or a different generation of the same product. A second angle or a separate search for text printed on the item can help.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to refine the eBay results
Treat the image search as a starting point. Add the brand, model, color, size, material, year, or category as text. If a label has distinctive wording, search that wording separately; quotation marks can help search for an exact phrase.

Then use the available filters. eBay’s search help describes filters for item specifics, condition, buying format, returns, delivery, and location, though the options shown can vary by category and interface.
- Choose a category and condition that fit what you are buying.
- Set a realistic price range and choose auction or Buy It Now if relevant.
- Check seller location, shipping cost, delivery estimate, and return terms.
- Use item specifics to narrow technical details that may not be obvious in a photo.
- Start with Best Match for relevance, then compare prices or ending times where those matter to you.
Best Match is not simply a lowest-price sort. eBay says it can take query relevance, popularity, price, browsing history, location, seller track record, listing completeness, and promoted listings into account. If the item is not available now, save a useful search so you can check again later.
How to verify a visual match before buying
Before paying, compare the listing details with the item you actually need. A visually similar product may differ in revision, size, material, compatibility, condition, or included components.
- Identity: Match the brand, exact model number, generation, measurements, and specifications—not just the overall appearance.
- Compatibility: For electronics, vehicle parts, or other components, confirm the listing’s compatibility details against your device or system.
- Condition and contents: Read the condition description and check what is included or excluded. Compare the seller’s photos with the listing text.
- Authenticity and provenance: For collectibles and luxury goods, check relevant serial numbers, date codes, hallmarks, grading information, or certificates where applicable. A photo match alone cannot authenticate an item.
- Actual-item photos: Determine whether the listing shows the specific item for sale or relies on stock or catalog imagery, especially when condition matters.
- Transaction terms: Check shipping cost and timing, return policy, seller feedback, and transaction history.
For safety-related products, replacement parts, electronics, and high-value collectibles, do not treat visual similarity as proof of fit, safety, or authenticity.
Which search method should you use?
| Method | Main strength | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| eBay image search | Finds visually related listings on eBay directly when the feature is available. | May be unavailable and can return approximate matches rather than the exact item. |
| Google Lens | Can help identify products, read visible text, and find sources across the web. | Results are not limited to eBay, so you need to carry useful terms into an eBay search. |
| Bing Visual Search | Offers broad visual and similar-image discovery on desktop or mobile. | It is not an eBay inventory search; results may include unrelated visual matches. |
| eBay keyword search | Works well with a known model, brand, or part number and supports detailed filters. | You need useful search terms. |
| Barcode scan | Can provide a quick catalog lookup for a packaged product with a readable barcode. | Cannot identify an unmarked, unique, handmade, or vintage object just from its appearance. |
Privacy when searching with a photo
Grant only the camera or photo access needed for the search, and crop screenshots before uploading or sharing them. Avoid submitting pictures that include faces, children, addresses, documents, receipts, license plates, or other sensitive details. eBay’s published image-retention guidance for listing photos does not establish how long buyer image-search uploads are retained, so do not treat listing-photo retention information as an answer about search uploads.
