UPI vs IMPS vs NEFT: Which Is Best for Sending Money?

UPI is often the easiest choice for everyday app payments; IMPS offers instant bank-channel transfers, while NEFT handles bank-detail transfers with no RBI-set amount ceiling.

For a routine payment to someone who accepts it, UPI is often the simplest choice. IMPS suits an instant transfer through a participating bank channel using bank details, while NEFT is useful when you need to send a larger amount using beneficiary account details. The right option depends on the amount, recipient details, channel and your bank’s current limits—not just speed.

UPI vs IMPS vs NEFT at a glance

Payment method Speed and availability Published system limit Best fit
UPI NPCI describes UPI payments as instant and available 24/7. Normally up to ₹1 lakh per transaction; specified categories have higher limits, including up to ₹5 lakh for IPO and Retail Direct Scheme transactions. Bank or app limits may be lower. Everyday app payments and transfers to recipients with a supported UPI address.
IMPS NPCI describes IMPS as real-time and available 24×7, including holidays. Up to ₹5 lakh per transaction through channels other than SMS and IVR. A bank may set tighter limits. An instant transfer using a participating bank’s mobile, internet or ATM channel.
NEFT Available 24×7×365. RBI describes it as near-real-time, processed in half-hourly batches. No RBI-imposed transfer amount ceiling; a member bank may set its own limit. Transfers using beneficiary bank details, especially when another rail’s limit is insufficient.

These are system-level descriptions, not a guarantee that a particular transaction will complete instantly. Your bank, the recipient’s bank, the app and the channel you select can affect availability and limits. Sources: NPCI’s UPI FAQ, NPCI’s IMPS overview and the RBI’s NEFT FAQ.

Which one should you use?

Your situation Likely choice Check before sending
You are paying a person or merchant through an app, and they support UPI. UPI Recipient and app support, transaction category and your applicable bank or app limit.
You need an instant bank-channel transfer and have the beneficiary’s details. IMPS Whether your bank enables IMPS on your chosen channel, your per-transaction and daily limits, and any fee.
You need to send an amount that may exceed another rail’s limit and have the recipient’s bank details. NEFT Your bank’s own amount cap, beneficiary setup and any charge for your chosen channel.

For UPI, NPCI says a beneficiary need not be registered in advance when you use a supported identifier, such as a virtual payment address or account number with IFSC. You do need to register with a participating payment service provider and link your bank account. UPI is built over IMPS infrastructure, but adds app-oriented features such as simplified merchant payments and a single app for transfers. Details: NPCI UPI FAQ.

How fast are they?

UPI

NPCI describes UPI payments as instant and available 24/7. It is usually the most direct option when both sides can use the supported app or payment address.

IMPS

NPCI calls IMPS a real-time payment service available around the clock, including holidays. It can be initiated through mobile, internet and ATM channels, subject to the services your bank offers.

NEFT

NEFT is not limited to banking hours: the RBI says it is available 24×7×365. It is near-real-time rather than an instant rail, with transactions processed through half-hourly batches. That makes it useful at any time, but not the best choice if your priority is an instant transfer.

Limits: what the published figures mean

The published figures refer to system limits; your bank or app can impose lower limits, and limits may vary by channel or transaction category.

  • UPI: NPCI’s FAQ states a normal limit of up to ₹1 lakh per transaction. Certain categories have higher limits, including up to ₹5 lakh for IPO and Retail Direct Scheme transactions. Confirm that your payment qualifies and check the current app and bank limit. NPCI UPI FAQ.
  • IMPS: NPCI states a limit of ₹5 lakh per transaction for channels other than SMS and IVR. It advises customers to check with their bank for applicable details. NPCI IMPS overview.
  • NEFT: RBI sets no transfer amount ceiling for NEFT, but a member bank may apply its own limit. No RBI ceiling therefore does not mean your bank will allow an unlimited transfer. RBI NEFT FAQ.

Fees and beneficiary details

For an online NEFT transfer initiated by a savings-account holder, RBI rules prohibit the bank from charging a fee. That rule should not be generalized to every customer or channel: RBI lists maximum charges banks may choose to levy on other outward NEFT transactions. For IMPS, NPCI directs customers to their bank for fee details; check your bank’s schedule for the channel you plan to use. RBI NEFT FAQ · NPCI IMPS overview.

To set up an online NEFT beneficiary, RBI lists the recipient’s name, bank and branch, IFSC, account type and account number. Verify those details with the recipient and their bank before submitting the transfer. UPI and IMPS may use different identifiers or channels, so follow the instructions shown by your bank or payment app rather than assuming the details are interchangeable.

Fees are not identical across every UPI transaction either. NPCI’s UPI FAQ discusses charges for particular PPI-on-UPI transactions; check the terms for the specific app, account and payment type rather than assuming every UPI payment has the same fee treatment. NPCI UPI FAQ.

Before you authorize a transfer

  • Check the recipient’s name and payment address or bank details carefully. For NEFT, verify the account number and IFSC against information from the recipient or their bank.
  • Confirm the amount is within your bank’s and app’s current limits, including any daily cap.
  • Review the fee, if any, shown for your selected channel before you confirm.
  • Never share your UPI PIN, OTP or banking password. NPCI says a UPI payment cannot be stopped once initiated, so verify the recipient details before authorizing it. NPCI UPI FAQ.

Why UPI is not always the best option

Convenience does not settle every case. The recipient must be reachable through a supported UPI identifier or merchant setup, and transaction limits can rule it out for an amount you need to send. IMPS offers another real-time route through participating bank channels. NEFT can be the better fit when you have bank details and need a transfer amount beyond the limits your bank allows on other rails, though your bank can still set its own NEFT cap.
