The totals were substantially higher than a year earlier, although they slipped modestly from August’s record. Cashfree co-founder Reeju Datta linked the rise in daily transaction value to larger payments around the start of the festival season, including Ganesh Chaturthi; that is an industry executive’s interpretation, not proof that festivals alone drove the increase.
How much did UPI handle in September 2026?
Reports by Business Standard and Business Today, both dated October 1, attribute September’s figures to NPCI:
- Transaction volume: 24.07 billion.
- Transaction value: ₹29.37 trillion, or ₹29.37 lakh crore.
The NPCI UPI Product Statistics page is the primary reference, but the accessible statistics extract showed data only through August 2026. The September totals here are therefore reported figures attributed to NPCI, rather than numbers independently visible in that extract.
How did September compare with last year and August?
| Comparison | Transactions | Transaction value | What it shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| September 2026 vs September 2025 | 24.07 billion vs 19.63 billion; up 22.6% | ₹29.37 trillion vs ₹24.89 trillion; up 18% | Strong year-on-year growth, according to Business Standard’s October 1 report. |
| September 2026 vs August 2026 | 24.07 billion vs 24.51 billion; down 1.8% | ₹29.37 trillion vs ₹29.82 trillion; down 1.5% | A modest month-on-month dip after August’s higher totals, as reported by Business Standard and Business Today. |
September had 30 days, compared with August’s 31. Business Standard noted that small monthly volume declines have often coincided with shorter months. The calendar difference is useful context, but it does not establish that it explains the whole drop.

What do the daily averages say?
Business Standard and Business Today reported September averages of 802 million transactions and ₹97,913 crore in value per day. These reported daily figures help put the monthly totals in context: a shorter month can have lower aggregate volume even when activity on an average day remains high.
Datta said daily UPI value had stayed around ₹96,000 crore from April through August despite a rising number of payments, which he attributed to many of the additional transactions being small. He said September’s extra payments were larger than usual, lifting daily value above that level. This explanation comes from Cashfree’s co-founder, not from a published breakdown of transaction sizes in the cited reports.

What role did the festival season play?
Datta connected the change to the start of the festival season and noted that Ganesh Chaturthi fell in mid-September. His explanation is consistent with a month in which higher-value transactions can raise the daily value average, but the reported totals do not isolate festival spending from other influences.
NPST managing director and CEO Deepak Chand Thakur offered a forward-looking view, saying consumers’ use of UPI for online and offline purchases could translate into greater digital-payment activity as the festival season continued. That is a forecast, not a measured September result.

How does September fit into the longer-term picture?
For broader context, a Press Information Bureau release dated April 30, 2026, reproducing NPCI statistics, reported 24,161.69 crore UPI transactions worth ₹314 lakh crore in financial year 2025–26. It gave year-on-year growth of 30.0% by volume and 20.59% by value. These are financial-year totals and growth rates, so they should not be compared as if they were September calendar-month figures.
Separately, Business Today reported that a framework was scheduled to take effect on October 15, 2026, for certain person-to-merchant transactions above ₹2,000. Its report said payments up to ₹2,000 and merchants with monthly UPI receipts up to ₹1 lakh would remain outside the described charge. As of October 4, this was an upcoming framework as described in that report—not a fee already in effect.
