NPCI’s general UPI ceiling is up to ₹1 lakh per transaction, but eligible categories have higher ceilings and your bank can set a lower limit. NPCI specifically says customers pay no charge for PPI-on-UPI transactions; that statement does not establish a universal fee rule for every UPI route or service.
What is the UPI transaction limit?
NPCI’s UPI FAQ states a general limit of up to ₹1 lakh per transaction. Treat this as an NPCI ceiling, not a promise that every bank, app or customer can send ₹1 lakh in one payment. Banks may apply lower internal limits or additional controls.
NPCI limits by transaction category
| Transaction type | NPCI-published ceiling | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| General UPI transactions | Up to ₹1 lakh per transaction | NPCI FAQ; a bank may set a lower cap. |
| Capital markets, collections, insurance and foreign inward remittances | Up to ₹2 lakh per transaction | Applies to the specified categories in NPCI’s FAQ; bank limits may be lower. |
| IPO and Retail Direct Scheme transactions | Up to ₹5 lakh per transaction | Category ceiling stated in NPCI’s FAQ; bank limits may be lower. |
| Specified tax-aligned categories | Up to ₹5 lakh per transaction | NPCI circular OC 185B, dated 28 August 2025; enhanced ceiling applies to verified merchants, and member banks retain discretion to set internal limits. |
The later tax-aligned limit is not a general ₹5 lakh cap for all UPI payments. NPCI’s circular OC 185B applies enhanced limits to specified categories and merchants categorized as “Verified Merchant.” Member banks may set internal limits within NPCI’s overall ceilings.
Why might my bank or app allow less?
An NPCI category ceiling is the system-level maximum, not necessarily the limit available on your account. The applicable amount can depend on your bank’s internal rules, the transaction purpose, the app and the payment route. Check the limit shown by your bank or app before relying on a higher category ceiling, particularly for a large payment.
#1 Best Overall
- Confirm that the transaction qualifies for the higher-limit category.
- For the enhanced tax-aligned ceiling, check that the merchant is verified and eligible.
- Ask your bank whether it has a lower cap or additional controls for your account or payment.
Does UPI charge customers a fee?
NPCI’s FAQ answers specifically for PPI-on-UPI: “There are no charges to be paid by the customer/ PPI holder for UPI transactions.” It also says customers pay no charge for receiving UPI transactions from PPIs. These are statements about PPI-on-UPI, including receiving such transactions—not a complete fee schedule for every bank-account payment, app, merchant arrangement, funding source or UPI-related service.
The cited NPCI material does not establish a universal fee rule for every UPI payment route. If a fee appears, inspect the payment details and check your bank’s or app’s current terms to determine whether it relates to the underlying payment, a separate service, a wallet/PPI funding route or another arrangement. Do not assume that merchant-side pricing is a fee charged to you as the customer.

What is the UPI Cash Point limit and can it have a fee?
UPI Cash Point is a separate cash-withdrawal service at authorized business-correspondent outlets, not an ordinary person-to-person or merchant payment. NPCI’s UPI Cash Point page gives a limit of ₹5,000 per transaction.
NPCI’s Cash Point FAQs say an outlet might charge a convenience fee, usually ₹5–20, with the fee structure determined by the outlet and its bank partner. Ask the outlet about any fee before completing a withdrawal; this possible charge is specific to the Cash Point service, not a general UPI payment fee.

What should I check before making a large or unusual UPI payment?
- Identify the payment route: establish whether the money comes from a bank account or a full-KYC PPI/wallet balance.
- Check the purpose: determine whether the payment is an ordinary transfer or falls within a specifically eligible higher-limit category.
- Verify the counterparty when relevant: the enhanced 2025 ceiling for tax-aligned categories requires an eligible verified merchant.
- Confirm your available cap: check your bank or app’s limit and any account-specific controls before initiating the payment.
- Review any fee separately: inspect the transaction details and applicable terms; for a Cash Point withdrawal, ask the outlet about its convenience fee.
