If your UPI payment shows failed or pending, check the transaction in your UPI app before paying again. A failed debit, a pending transfer and a merchant payment without confirmation follow different paths: the right next step depends on whether your account was debited and whether the recipient or merchant received the payment.

Check your UPI transaction status first

  1. Open your UPI app and go to Transaction history or the equivalent history screen.
  2. Select the payment and check or refresh its status. NPCI says transaction history shows past and pending transactions. NPCI UPI FAQ
  3. Check your bank balance or statement to see whether the amount was debited or reversed. Save the transaction reference or RRN, date, amount, displayed status and relevant bank entry before contacting support. NPCI’s complaint facility asks for transaction details including the date, transaction number/RRN, bank and amount. NPCI UPI complaint facility

Do not repeat a payment just because the app has not confirmed it. A pending transfer may still be processing, and a merchant may have received a payment before its system displayed confirmation.

What to do for each UPI payment status

Failed or declined after your account was debited

NPCI says money from a failed transaction should be refunded to your account. Check your bank balance or statement for the reversal. If it has not appeared within one hour, NPCI advises contacting your bank’s customer support. This is immediate guidance from NPCI’s FAQ; the applicable RBI outer reversal timeline depends on whether it was a transfer or a merchant payment. NPCI UPI FAQ

Pending transfer to another person or account

NPCI says a pending transaction may have succeeded while the beneficiary bank is delayed in crediting the recipient. Its FAQ says the amount will reach the recipient within 48 hours once the bank completes daily settlements. Treat that as NPCI’s FAQ guidance, not a guarantee for every bank or case. Keep the transaction reference and check the status rather than sending a duplicate payment. If it remains unresolved, raise a transaction complaint in your app or contact your bank. NPCI UPI FAQ

Merchant payment with no confirmation

Ask the merchant to check its transaction records before you pay again. A merchant’s system may not show confirmation even when the payment is being processed. RBI treats an account debit where the merchant location did not receive confirmation as a separate failed-transaction case, with a different reversal timeline from a transfer to another person.

RBI reversal timelines for eligible failed UPI transactions

The Reserve Bank of India’s circular DPSS.CO.PD No.629/02.01.014/2019-20, dated September 20, 2019, sets these turnaround times and delay compensation for the specified cases. “T” means the transaction date.

Situation Required reversal Compensation for delay
Your account was debited for a transfer, but the beneficiary was not credited The beneficiary bank must auto-reverse if it cannot credit the beneficiary by T+1 day. ₹100 per day beyond T+1 day.
Your account was debited for a merchant payment, but the merchant location did not receive transaction confirmation Auto-reversal within T+5 days. ₹100 per day beyond T+5 days.

These are not interchangeable deadlines: T+1 applies to the described transfer failure, while T+5 applies to the described merchant-confirmation failure. The circular states compensation is credited to the account holder. The exact calendar date depends on the transaction date and applicable day-counting rules, so confirm the calculation with your bank or the RBI framework rather than assuming a particular date. How to raise a UPI complaint

  1. Start in the app or with your bank. Use the transaction’s complaint or help option, or contact your bank’s customer support. NPCI says member banks and institutions handle resolution. NPCI UPI FAQ
  2. Use UPI Help if available. NPCI’s UPI Help guidance says a complaint for a supported debit transaction may be raised after five minutes. It excludes successful person-to-person transactions from the supported complaint types. To check a complaint already raised, select the transaction in history and choose the complaint-status option; refresh to update the status. App labels can vary. NPCI UPI Help guide (2023)
  3. Escalate through NPCI’s complaint facility if needed. Provide the requested transaction details and retain any complaint reference. The member bank or institution handles the resolution. NPCI UPI complaint facility
  4. Use the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme route if the relevant timeline is missed without redress. RBI’s circular identifies this as a route for customers who do not receive redress within the prescribed turnaround time. RBI circular on failed transactions

If you suspect fraud or see a transaction you did not authorize, contact your bank directly and promptly; NPCI’s complaint portal directs suspected fraud or unauthorized-transaction cases to the bank. Never share your UPI PIN: it authorizes transactions, and NPCI says bank customer support will not ask you for it. NPCI UPI FAQ

A merchant refund is different from a failed-payment reversal

If a purchase went through and you later return goods or reject a service, that is a merchant refund, not an automatic reversal for a failed UPI transaction. NPCI says the merchant asks its bank to refund the charged amount through the defined process. Contact the merchant about that refund; the failed-transaction timelines above apply to the specified transaction failures, not every return or service dispute. NPCI UPI FAQ
