UPI averaged about 802 million transactions a day in September 2026, according to a report published by Dainik Jagran English on October 2. That is a monthly daily average—not proof that UPI recorded more than 800 million transactions on every day, or a claim about one record-breaking day.
What the 800 million milestone means
The reported figure is the September total divided into an average per day. Dainik Jagran English said UPI processed 24.07 billion transactions during the month, equivalent to approximately 802 million a day across September’s 30 calendar days. The report described this as the first time the monthly daily average had crossed 800 million.
This is distinct from a single-day record. A monthly average above 800 million does not establish that every day exceeded that level, and it should not be conflated with separate headlines about a one-day count.
September volume and value
Dainik Jagran English reported September’s transaction value at ₹29.37 trillion, or ₹29.37 lakh crore. It compared that with ₹24.89 trillion in September 2025 and reported a 22.6% year-over-year increase in transaction volume.

Why September’s total was lower than August’s
The same report put August 2026 volume at 24.51 billion transactions, above September’s 24.07 billion. That does not conflict with a September daily average of about 802 million: August has 31 days, while September has 30. A shorter month can have a lower total but a higher average per day.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) statistics page displayed 24,508.96 million transactions in August 2026, with a value of ₹29,82,355.95 crore and 752 live banks. Those are the latest figures shown on that page in the material available for this report; they are not September data. NPCI’s UPI product statistics also notes that its figures exclude transactions involving a debit and credit to the same account from August 2018 onward. Dainik Jagran English rounded August’s volume to 24.51 billion and its value to ₹29.82 lakh crore.

How firmly is the September figure confirmed?
The September average and monthly totals are attributed to Dainik Jagran English’s October 2, 2026 report. The NPCI monthly statistics page cited here showed data through August 2026, so that table does not independently confirm September’s figures. Treat the 802-million figure as the report’s September monthly average, rather than as a number verified by the displayed NPCI table.

UPI handles both person-to-person (P2P) transfers and person-to-merchant (P2M) payments. NPCI’s ecosystem statistics glossary distinguishes those categories, but the historical August 2025 split shown there is too old to describe September 2026’s transaction mix. NPCI’s UPI ecosystem statistics defines the categories; it does not establish how September’s transactions were divided between them.
