For ordinary hiking and travel, the GoPro Magnetic Swivel Clip is the most direct backpack-strap choice: it clips to gear, swivels 360 degrees, includes a mounting buckle and thumb screw, and doubles as a kickstand. For running, skiing, biking, or other hard movement, choose the centered GoPro Chesty instead. Use the Jaws Flex Clamp on rigid pack structures and the Flexible Grip Mount when wrapping around an unusual support is more practical than clipping.
These are use-case recommendations based on each mount’s design, not independent laboratory rankings. A mechanically attached camera can still produce poor footage if the backpack strap flexes, twists, or vibrates.

Which mount fits your activity?
- Casual hiking: Start with Magnetic Swivel Clip.
- Travel and sightseeing: Magnetic Swivel Clip offers the quickest repositioning and can stand as a kickstand.
- Trail running: Chesty or a firmly supported flexible mount is preferable to a small clip exposed to repeated impacts.
- Mountain biking: Chesty gives a more predictable centered frame; add a safety tether.
- Skiing or snowboarding: Chesty is easier to stabilize over outer layers.
- Rigid pack frame, pole or rail: Jaws, provided the support fits its 0.25–2 inch (0.6–5 cm) range.

Use the clip as the primary attachment. Do not treat the magnet alone as retention for a backpack or action sport. On a moving shoulder strap, the camera may bounce, rotate or slowly sag, so a tether is prudent for expensive equipment or consequential environments.
Best for irregular supports: Flexible Grip Mount
The Flexible Grip Mount uses Gear-Tie-style construction to wrap around unusual surfaces such as poles, rails, branches or pack structures. It is a useful general-purpose option when a rigid clip cannot sit flat. Wrapping more securely does not eliminate movement in a flexible strap, however; test for rotation and vibration with the fully loaded pack before relying on it.
Best clamp for rigid structures: Jaws Flex Clamp
Jaws clamps objects from 0.25 to 2 inches (0.6 to 5 cm), includes an adjustable neck and supports GoPro quick-release mounting. It suits a rigid pack frame, pole, rail, bench, vehicle interior or camp fixture. A direct clamp setup can keep the camera relatively low profile; the adjustable neck adds framing options but also increases leverage and potential vibration.

A thin, flexible shoulder strap is usually a poor Jaws surface. The strap can deform under the clamp, and the extra weight and neck may make the camera rotate. Respect the diameter range rather than forcing the clamp onto a support that is too small, too large or unstable.

Chesty is a padded, breathable, adjustable harness designed to work over heavy jackets and includes a quick-release buckle. It places the camera at the center of the torso, reducing the effect of one shoulder strap flexing. That makes it the better starting point when stability and a consistent first-person view matter more than attaching directly to the pack.
It is still separate equipment. Check that it does not conflict with the backpack’s sternum strap, hip belt, hydration hose or load lifters. It can also feel warmer and less discreet than a small clip, and its viewpoint is lower than a shoulder mount.

How to choose a backpack mount
- Define the support: Choose a clip for a firm upper strap, a wrap for an unusual shape, a clamp for a rigid object, or Chesty for a centered torso platform.
- Prioritize movement tolerance: The more running, downhill travel or impact involved, the more valuable a body-centered mount becomes.
- Check camera access: Confirm that the mount does not block buttons, doors, displays, battery access or the USB port.
- Check pack operation: Make sure it does not interfere with the sternum buckle, load lifters, hydration tube, trekking-pole loops, front pockets, rain cover or emergency gear.
- Plan retention: Leave a place for a safety tether, particularly with a high-value camera or high-consequence activity.
- Verify compatibility: Match your exact GoPro model, case and cage to the live product page before ordering.
How to mount a GoPro to a backpack strap
- Inspect the strap or attachment point for damaged webbing, loose stitching and excessive flex.
- Place the mount on the upper, firm portion of the shoulder strap rather than the loose lower section.
- Attach the clip, flexible mount or clamp, then install the GoPro mounting buckle and thumb screw.
- Tighten the thumb screw firmly by hand. Do not use tools to overtighten plastic parts.
- Confirm that the camera is fully seated in the buckle or quick-release base.
- Put on the pack with the actual load and clothing you will use, then aim the camera slightly upward.
- Record a short walking, turning and pack-adjustment test.
- Review for vibration, horizon tilt, blocked lens, strap intrusion and unwanted clothing or hose movement.
- Add a safety tether where appropriate and repeat the check after changing layers or tightening the sternum strap.
The upper strap usually gives more scenery and a higher viewpoint, but it is off-center and may show an arm or pack edge. A wide field of view can help capture the path; confirm that the strap does not dominate the image.

Shaky video
Backpack webbing flexes as you walk, and running or downhill movement magnifies that motion. A high camera, long extension or heavy camera-plus-accessory setup adds leverage. Move the mount toward the strap’s firmest section, shorten the connection, or switch to Chesty for high-impact use.

Slow tilt or horizon drift
Reseat the mounting buckle, hand-tighten the thumb screw and move the camera closer to your torso. If the swivel or strap continues to settle, use a direct low-profile connection or a more rigid support.

Backpack strap in the frame
Move the camera slightly outward or higher and rotate it away from the strap. Use a wider field of view only after checking the resulting composition. If the strap cannot be avoided, a chest mount may provide a cleaner frame.
Slipping or detachment
A tapered or loose strap, unsupported fabric under a clamp, an incompletely seated buckle or excessive accessory load can all cause problems. Reattach to a firm, flat area, verify the quick-release connection before each outing and add a tether.
Clothing or muffled audio
Change the height and angle, secure loose clothing and route hydration hoses away from the microphone. An external microphone is an option only when the camera and housing support that configuration. Wind may still make framing and retention more important than pristine audio.

Compatibility, weather and retention checks
GoPro’s live pages list broad compatibility across several generations, including newer cameras such as HERO13 Black and MAX2, but lists can change. Check the exact model on the Magnetic Swivel Clip, Jaws or Chesty page and consult GoPro’s mounting guidance at GoPro’s HERO manual. “Compatible with GoPro cameras” does not guarantee compatibility with every protective case, third-party cage, camera-plus-microphone setup, camera-plus-light configuration or orientation.
Do not infer that a mount is waterproof or weatherproof from the camera’s own water rating. The mount, camera, housing and accessories have separate limitations. Follow current manufacturer guidance for rain, snow, dust and cold conditions.
Final buying guidance
Buy the Magnetic Swivel Clip if you want the smallest, fastest solution for a normal backpack strap. Choose Flexible Grip Mount when the support is irregular, Jaws when it is rigid and within the clamp range, and Chesty when active movement makes a centered platform more important than a direct backpack attachment. Whatever you choose, test the loaded system before the trip and use secondary retention when losing the camera would be costly.
