Ubisoft reportedly cut 105 jobs at Red Storm Entertainment and ended active game development there, but the studio is not shutting down: it is expected to continue supporting Ubisoft’s global IT operations and Snowdrop engine. The details were reported on March 19, 2026, by GameDeveloper and VGC; neither report reproduces a public Ubisoft statement specifically announcing the Red Storm cuts.
What Ubisoft reportedly changed at Red Storm
The reports describe two linked changes: 105 positions were affected, and Red Storm would stop developing games. The studio was not described as closing. Instead, it would remain operational in a technical support role focused on global IT and Ubisoft’s Snowdrop engine, according to the contemporaneous reports.
The figure is 105, rather than exactly 100. GameDeveloper attributed its account to a source within Ubisoft; VGC reported an internal Ubisoft announcement and also gave the 105-job figure and continuing support role. Neither opened report includes a direct public Ubisoft announcement devoted to these cuts.
Is Red Storm shutting down?
No. The reporting says Red Storm will continue operating, but with a different function: support work rather than active game development. That distinction matters. Ending a studio’s game production is a significant change, but it is not the same as closing the studio or ending all of its work.

Why Red Storm matters to Ubisoft games
Ubisoft’s official Red Storm profile says the studio was founded in 1996 by novelist Tom Clancy, managing director Steve Reid and seventeen developers, and joined Ubisoft in 2000. The company credits Red Storm with the original Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six (1998) and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon (2001), as well as later contributions to The Division and other Ubisoft titles. The studio is based in Cary, North Carolina.
Its more recent releases included the VR games Werewolves Within (2016), Star Trek: Bridge Crew (2017) and Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR (2023), according to VGC. GameDeveloper described Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR as Red Storm’s last shipped title and reported that an untitled Splinter Cell VR game and The Division Heartland were cancelled; VGC also noted the cancellation of The Division Heartland in 2024.

How the cuts fit Ubisoft’s wider restructuring
On January 21, 2026, Ubisoft announced a company-wide organizational, operational and portfolio reset. The company said it would organize around five specialized Creative Houses, refocus its portfolio and accelerate cost reduction. Its announcement said six games were discontinued and seven were given additional development time; those are company-wide portfolio figures, not counts of Red Storm projects.
Ubisoft’s CEO Yves Guillemot described the broader industry context in the announcement: “On the one hand, the AAA industry has become persistently more selective and competitive with rising development costs and greater challenges in creating brands. On the other hand, exceptional AAA games, when successful, have more financial potential than ever.” This was a comment on Ubisoft’s wider strategy, not a direct explanation of the Red Storm layoffs. March reporting places the cuts within Ubisoft’s cost-saving effort, but the reports do not establish that the January reset alone determined every detail of the Red Storm decision.

Will Ubisoft still make Ghost Recon games?
Ubisoft’s January announcement lists Ghost Recon among the brands assigned to Creative House 2. That indicates the franchise remains part of the company’s portfolio, but it does not identify a developer for a future game. The March reports about Red Storm do not say which studio, if any, is working on the next Ghost Recon title.
