The U.S. Justice Department closed its investigation of Montreal-based Future Electronics in 2002, according to contemporaneous reporting by EDN. The closure ended the inquiry; it was not a court ruling, and EDN reported that the FBI had not filed charges against the company.
What the Justice Department’s reported decision said
EDN reported on April 4, 2002, that Future Electronics had announced the investigation was over. As EDN quoted the company’s April 4 statement, officials had “determined that there are no grounds for further investigation of Future Electronics, and the matter is now officially closed.” The statement itself was not available in the sources checked, so this wording is attributable to Future as reported by EDN, not independently verified against the original.
EDN also reported that the decision was conveyed in a letter titled “Declination of Prosecution,” sent to Future earlier that week, and that Justice officials told Canadian police they were revoking their request for assistance. The letter was not available for direct review, and EDN did not quote a Justice Department official explaining the decision.
What the investigation concerned
EDN’s 1999 and 2002 accounts described an inquiry that followed accusations made in 1997 by unidentified sources. The allegations concerned whether Future kept two sets of books to mislead suppliers, including in its reporting of supplier rebates, sales and inventory. They were allegations in the reporting, not established findings. Future denied wrongdoing and said investigators misunderstood industry practices involving rebates and “ship from stock and debit.” EDN’s 1999 report described the dispute; its 2002 account reported the later closure.

Why the inquiry involved Canadian authorities
The investigation crossed the Canada–U.S. border. EDN reported that the FBI asked Canadian police for help in 1999 and that court actions followed a May 1999 raid at Future’s headquarters, concerning documents seized there. In 2000, EE Times covered the dispute over sharing seized files with U.S. investigators. EE Times’ July 4, 2000 report focused on that document-sharing issue.
Closure was not a court exoneration
EDN characterized the closure as a victory from Future’s perspective, and quoted a company spokesperson calling it “truly a celebratory moment for the company” and describing the allegations as “trumped up.” Those are company views, not findings by a court or a quoted DOJ conclusion. EDN said the FBI had not filed charges against Future. Its account describes an investigation ending, not a trial or judicial decision resolving the allegations.

The central contemporaneous account is EDN’s April 4, 2002 report. The original Future statement and DOJ letter were not available in the sources cited here, so the reported rationale should be understood with that limitation.
