Tyson Foods announced in December 2024 that it planned to permanently close its Emporia, Kansas, meat-processing plant, affecting 809 employees according to the Kansas WARN notice reported at the time. Tyson projected that operations would end on or about February 14, 2025, while warning that some work could continue beyond that date. By June 2025, the City of Emporia said production had ceased.
What happened at the Emporia Tyson plant?
Tyson announced the planned closure in December 2024. The facility at 2101 W. 6th St. was a non-harvest beef and pork processing operation. It produced ground beef and value-added marinated protein products, rather than slaughtering cattle or hogs at the site. The Topeka Capital-Journal reported the WARN notice and employee impact; Tyson’s description of the facility and its products was reported by Kansas Reflector.
Planned date and later confirmation
In an employee letter, Tyson vice president of beef and pork operations Ernesto Sanchez wrote, “We anticipate that the last day of operations at the Emporia plant will occur on or about February 14, 2025.” The date was a forecast, not a guarantee of the final shift: the notice allowed that certain operations and positions might continue afterward. The contemporaneous report reproduced the notice and letter. In June 2025, the city said production had ceased and Tyson was completing post-production shutdown work. It did not specify the exact last day of production. The City of Emporia’s update provides that later status.
How many employees were affected?
The Kansas WARN notice was reported as covering 809 employees at the Emporia site. “800 workers” is a rounded description of that notice-based figure, not a separate count. The 809 figure and site address were reported by the Topeka Capital-Journal / USA Today Network; the underlying state notice was not independently available in the cited coverage.

Why did Tyson say it was closing the plant?
Tyson said the closure would increase operating efficiency. That is the company’s stated rationale for the Emporia decision. Contemporary coverage also described broader cattle-supply and livestock-cost pressures affecting the beef business, but those conditions do not establish that they were the sole or specific cause of this plant closure.
Company-wide financial results help explain the wider operating backdrop without proving the reason for an individual facility decision. Tyson reported beef-unit income of $233 million for the fiscal year ending September 2023 and a $291 million beef-unit loss for fiscal 2024, figures reported by Kansas Reflector in December 2024. They are fiscal-year business-unit results, not a measure of the Emporia plant’s finances.

What happened to affected workers?
The City of Emporia said it and community partners coordinated job placement, training, and other support after the announcement. In its June 2025 update, the city reported that many former Tyson employees had found jobs locally or regionally and that its Rapid Response Team continued to provide assistance. Those are city-reported outcomes; the update did not provide a complete, independently verified count of former workers’ employment status. Read the city’s update for its description of the support effort.
The city also reported that about 5% of employees offered transfers by Tyson chose to relocate. That percentage refers to workers offered transfers who chose relocation, not to all affected employees. The city’s June 2025 account is the source for the figure.

What is known about the former plant site?
In June 2025, the city said Tyson still owned the property and that no future use had been announced. A June 2026 Kansas state meeting document confirms that the Emporia plant had closed, but it does not update the property’s ownership or reuse. The available material therefore does not establish whether the site has since changed hands or been put to a new use. The city update and the state meeting document address those respective points.
