Tyka, a Washington, D.C.-based insurance coverage boutique, launched on October 1, 2026, with 21 lawyers, including 12 founding partners who left Wiley Rein. The firm says it represents insurers in litigation and other high-value coverage matters.
What is Tyka?
Tyka is a new law firm focused on representing insurers. Its launch announcement describes the firm as a continuation of the group’s prior insurer-side work, now housed in a firm devoted to insurer representation. That characterization comes from Tyka; launch coverage does not independently establish continuity of particular client engagements.
Bloomberg Law and The Insurer also reported the launch and the 21-lawyer team size. The firm’s October 1 announcement supplies the roster, practice descriptions, and statements about its predecessor group’s honors.
Who founded the firm?
Tyka announced that 12 partners left Wiley Rein to found the firm, joined by nine additional lawyers, for a 21-lawyer team at launch.

- General liability: broader liability coverage disputes.
- Artificial intelligence: a stated core practice area; the launch announcement does not specify a narrower set of AI-related services.
The firm’s announcement describes disputes that range from securities class actions, derivative suits, and government investigations to ransomware incidents and professional liability claims. These are examples of matters in its stated scope, not a published record of case outcomes.

What did the firm say about its prior recognition?
Tyka’s launch announcement says the predecessor group received 10 Law360 Insurance Group of the Year honors and held a Chambers Band 1 ranking for 22 years. Those figures are claims made by the firm in its announcement; they should not be read as independently verified rankings or awards here.
Eggert said, “Our clients have trusted us with their most significant matters for more than 20 years.” Melvin described the launch as “not a pivot or a reinvention,” saying Tyka continues the group’s prior work within a firm dedicated to representing insurers. These statements convey the founders’ view of the transition; they do not establish that specific client matters moved to the new firm.

What the launch does—and does not—establish
The announcement and launch coverage establish the firm’s name, launch date, Washington, D.C. base, team size, leadership, and stated practice focus. They do not provide a basis for comparing legal fees, case outcomes, capacity against other firms, or client-by-client continuity. For an individual coverage dispute, the firm’s stated insurer-side focus is the relevant distinction; this launch report is not a recommendation or referral.
