Twitch announced on January 10, 2024, that it was eliminating just over 500 positions across the company. CEO Dan Clancy said Twitch needed to “rightsize” after earlier cost reductions failed to align staffing with the platform’s current scale and more conservative growth expectations. The announcement did not indicate that Twitch was closing, ending livestreaming, or cutting streamer payouts.
What Twitch announced
In a message to employees, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy said the company would eliminate “just over 500 people across Twitch.” The official announcement described a workforce reduction intended to improve efficiency and create a more sustainable business: Twitch’s January 10, 2024 announcement.
Twitch did not publish a departmental breakdown, country-by-country total, list of affected roles, severance totals, or a precise percentage of its workforce. Contemporary coverage estimated that the reduction represented about 35% of Twitch staff, but that was a media estimate rather than an official Twitch figure (TechCrunch).
Why Twitch said it was cutting jobs
Clancy said Twitch had spent the preceding year reducing costs and improving efficiency, but the organization was still “meaningfully larger” than the current business required. The company had planned staffing around where it expected the business to be three or more years in the future. As growth expectations became more conservative, Twitch concluded that those staffing levels no longer matched its present scale.

- Staffing assumptions had been too optimistic: Headcount reflected a longer-term growth outlook rather than the company’s current size.
- The stated goal was sustainability: Twitch framed the reduction as a way to align costs with the business while continuing to support streamers.
“Rightsizing” is Twitch’s description of the decision. Outside reports discussed pressure to make the expensive platform more profitable, but Twitch did not disclose a specific profit target, revenue goal, margin objective, or expected savings figure. The announcement also did not say that Twitch was insolvent or shutting down. Associated Press coverage provided additional context on the cost pressures surrounding the move.
Strong creator payouts and a smaller internal workforce
Clancy said Twitch paid more than $1 billion to streamers during 2023. That is a company-provided figure, not an independently presented audited disclosure in the layoff announcement. It describes payments to creators and should not be confused with Twitch’s revenue, profit, or a guarantee of future payouts.

Those statements are not contradictory. A platform can maintain substantial creator activity and payouts while reducing its own headcount if operating costs, staffing plans, and expected growth no longer align. Twitch said its focus remained on serving streamers and supporting careers on the platform, but the public memo did not prove that every product, moderation, support, or partnership function would operate without change.

The two Twitch announcements show a continuing effort to reduce the company’s cost base. They should not be combined with every layoff elsewhere in Amazon.

How the cuts related to Amazon
Twitch is owned by Amazon, and the January 2024 announcement arrived during a broader period of Amazon cost reductions. Amazon separately announced several hundred cuts in its Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios operations on the same day (TechCrunch’s report). Those were separate business-unit reductions, not additional Twitch positions.
The public material supports saying that Twitch’s layoffs came amid wider Amazon cost-cutting. It does not establish that every Twitch job elimination was directly ordered by a single Amazon-wide program, nor does it justify adding Prime Video, MGM, Amazon Games, or other reductions to Twitch’s total.

How employees were notified
Twitch’s memo described different procedures by location:
- Employees in the United States, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, and Singapore were to receive emails explaining whether their positions had been eliminated, followed by severance information and individual meetings.
- Processes in other countries were to follow local requirements and practices.
- Departing employees were temporarily allowed to retain Slack and email access so they could say goodbye to colleagues.
- Employees whose roles were not affected were also scheduled to receive confirmation, with regional all-hands meetings planned.
These were the procedures described in the company message; they do not establish that every employee had the same notice period, meeting schedule, or severance terms.

The announcement leaked before the planned notification
Clancy acknowledged that news of the layoffs leaked before Twitch could notify employees as planned and apologized for the anxiety caused by the leak. Later reporting examined his response, including coverage from the Los Angeles Times. The leak changed the timing and experience of the announcement, but not the confirmed scale or stated rationale of the reduction.
What streamers and viewers could infer
- The service was not announced as closing: Twitch said it remained focused on serving streamers.
- No immediate feature cuts were specified: The public announcement did not identify changes to moderation, discovery, subscriptions, advertising, or creator programs.
- Streamer payouts were not reported as reduced: Twitch’s 2023 payout figure does not establish a future payout policy.
- Operational effects were possible but unquantified: Without a team-by-team breakdown or follow-up metrics, readers cannot determine from the layoff notice alone whether support response times, product development, or moderation changed.
What remains unknown
The January 2024 announcement left several important questions unanswered:

Bottom line
