He also claimed the country was doing better than any other economically; that was his assessment, not an independently established finding.
What Trump meant by “a very bad job”
Trump made the remark at a White House Hispanic Heritage Month event. Reuters’ transcript captures the surrounding comments: “I’m very proud of the job we’ve done. We’ve done a job, but I’ve done a very bad job of explaining. I saw Rachel talking about, I’ve done a very bad job of explaining how good the country is doing. We’re doing better than any country in the world economically.” Reuters’ event transcript also records him contrasting what he called an “extremely poor job of promotion” with an “extremely great job of running the country.”
Those are Trump’s claims about his record. The wording does not amount to a concession that the economy itself was run poorly: the “bad job” he identified was explaining and promoting what he viewed as strong results.
Why the remark drew attention
The comment came as Trump prepared for a 32-day campaign blitz ahead of the November 3, 2026 midterm elections. Reuters described the political backdrop as including high gasoline prices and weak economic approval. That context helps explain the focus on how voters perceive the economy, but it does not establish that any single cost or economic indicator caused dissatisfaction. Reuters’ report on the campaign context describes the timing and pressure surrounding the remarks.

What the available economic indicators show—and do not show
Two reported indicators offer different, limited perspectives. One concerns employment; the other reflects households’ expectations. Neither alone is a complete assessment of economic performance or what families can afford.
| Indicator | What was reported | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Payroll employment | BLS was attributed with a gain of 29,000 nonfarm payroll jobs in September 2026. The figure appears in an October 2 statement by House Budget Committee Democrats, a partisan press release rather than the underlying BLS release. Committee statement | A reported monthly employment change; it does not by itself establish the economy’s overall condition or household affordability. |
| Consumer confidence | Reuters reported that the Conference Board’s September 2026 consumer-confidence reading was near a 12-and-a-half-year low. Reuters said households expected business and labor-market conditions to deteriorate over the next six months. Reuters report | A measure of sentiment and expectations, not a direct count of jobs or a complete measure of household finances. |
The figures point to different things: payrolls describe a change in employment, while confidence reflects surveyed expectations. Together they provide context for why Trump’s upbeat characterization faced scrutiny, but they are not a comprehensive scorecard. The cited reporting does not establish a full set of official measures for inflation, wages, GDP, income, or labor-market conditions, so these indicators alone cannot settle whether the economy was doing “great.”

How critics framed the issue
In the October 2 committee statement that cited the payroll figure, House Budget Committee Ranking Member Brendan Boyle said: “Families who can’t afford groceries or housing don’t need it explained to them.” His response frames the dispute as one about household costs and lived experience, rather than simply the effectiveness of the administration’s economic messaging. It is a partisan critic’s comment, not an independent economic assessment.
