The certified 2024 result is settled: Donald Trump received 312 electoral votes and Kamala Harris received 226, out of 538; 270 were needed to win. Those figures are election results, not betting-market prices or forecast probabilities. Exact historical Trump–Harris market odds and state-level betting prices are not established here, so they should not be inferred from forecasters’ projections or reported without a dated record from the specific market.
Betting-market odds, forecast probabilities and results are different things
Coverage of the 2024 contest can use “odds” to mean several different measures. Keeping them separate is essential when interpreting Trump–Harris betting markets and U.S. President projections.
- Betting-market price: the price of a particular contract on a particular venue at a particular time. It may be converted into an implied probability, but that conversion does not make it a forecast or a guarantee. Contract wording and the time of the quote matter.
- Forecast probability: a model provider’s estimate of the chance of an outcome, based on its data and methods. It is not a market quote, and different providers can produce different probabilities.
- Certified election result: the official outcome reported by election authorities. For 2024, the Federal Election Commission’s results compilation draws on results reported by state and territory election offices.
A historical market claim needs, at minimum, the venue, contract wording, timestamp, and the relevant price. Without those details, a number cannot be reliably compared with a model probability or another market quote.
Why swing-state odds matter to the Electoral College
The U.S. president is chosen through the Electoral College rather than by a direct national popular-vote count. Each state’s electoral votes equal its number of U.S. senators plus representatives, and the District of Columbia also participates. Most states award their electors to the statewide winner; Maine and Nebraska have an allocation component based on congressional districts. A candidate needs a majority of the 538 electoral votes—270—to win.

That system makes a state projection different from a national popular-vote estimate. A forecast can estimate each state separately and then aggregate those outcomes into an Electoral College projection. The chance of winning a particular state, the expected electoral-vote total, and the chance of winning the presidency are related measures, but they are not interchangeable.
“Swing state” is a common description of a competitive state, not an official federal election category. The seven states commonly treated as 2024 battlegrounds were Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. In the official Electoral College results table, Trump received the electoral votes assigned to each of those states.

The Associated Press’s 2024 Electoral College explainer identifies Pennsylvania as having 19 electoral votes, and Georgia and North Carolina as having 16 each. Those counts help explain why close contests in particular states can matter to the Electoral College map; the statewide vote and the electoral-vote allocation remain separate facts.
How the named 2024 forecast providers described their methods
Forecast probabilities belong to the provider that produced them. The two providers below described distinct approaches; their methods should not be blended into a single “model” or treated as betting-market prices.

| Decision Desk HQ, 2024 methodology | Described more than 200 base features, including economic indicators, the national and local political environment, candidate traits, and campaign-finance reports. Its ensemble included Bayesian ridge regression, random forest, gradient boosting, and ElasticNet. It also described using weighted, bias-corrected polling averages when available and correlated simulations. | Probabilities for each candidate winning each state, mean expected electoral-vote totals, and an overall Electoral College win probability. |
| Race to the WH, final 2024 forecast | Described combining the latest polling, state electoral history, and national economic trends, then simulating the Electoral College 50,000 times. | Winner predictions for every state and odds of either Harris or Trump winning, as described by Race to the WH. |
These are providers’ own accounts of their methods, not an independent audit of their models or a provider-performance ranking. A fair comparison of a specific forecast would also identify its publication date and model version, whether its probability concerns a state or the Electoral College, its polling treatment, and how it aggregates outcomes.
What the official 2024 result says
The Federal Election Commission’s 2024 results compilation records 312 electoral votes for Donald J. Trump and 226 for Kamala D. Harris, with 538 total and 270 needed to win. Its state-by-state table also records the electoral-vote allocations, including split allocations in Maine and Nebraska. This is the appropriate source for the final electoral-vote outcome, rather than a forecast page or a market quote.

The FEC compiles results reported by state and territorial election offices; it does not administer voting or determine election outcomes. As the agency explains, “Elections are primarily governed by state law and administered at the state and local level.” The distinction matters: an FEC compilation is an authoritative federal reference for reported results, while election administration and reporting originate with state and local authorities.

The available record establishes the certified result and describes forecast methodologies, but it does not establish a complete, directly comparable archive of Trump–Harris betting-market prices or swing-state betting odds. It therefore does not support exact historical market percentages, a claim about which market led, a ranking of venues, or a market trend over time.

- Helpful in various ways
To assess a historical quote responsibly, look for a contemporaneous record that identifies the market venue, the exact contract and settlement wording, and the timestamp. Price and volume context can also matter when comparing quotes. Keep that market record separate from any provider’s forecast probability, and compare both with certified results only after stating what each number measures.
