The company sought to sell its assets while temporarily supporting trucks already on the road; the case later moved to liquidation. Nikola’s losses, cash constraints and difficulty scaling production help explain the filing, but the bankruptcy does not by itself establish how much shareholders or individual creditors will recover.
Why did Nikola file for bankruptcy?
Nikola faced a combination of weak production economics, heavy losses, rapid cash use and difficulty scaling a commercial-truck business. Its CEO, Steve Girsky, told the Associated Press in 2025: “Like other companies in the electric vehicle industry, we have faced various market and macroeconomic factors that have impacted our ability to operate.”
The operating figures reported by the Associated Press show the pressure: Nikola produced 77 trucks in the second quarter, while reporting a net loss of nearly $134 million, then produced 83 trucks in the third quarter with a net loss of almost $200 million. AP also reported that Nikola had about $47 million in cash around the time of its filing. These figures point to a business spending heavily while producing at a scale that did not resolve its financial strain.
Nikola’s official filing warned of uncertainty around financing, asset sales, continued operations and stakeholder recoveries. The company said it would pursue an auction or sale of assets rather than promise a path back to ordinary operations.

Reputation and the business problem are separate issues
Nikola had already faced reputational damage. The Associated Press reported that founder Trevor Milton was convicted of misleading investors and later sentenced. In 2021, Nikola paid $125 million to settle a civil case brought by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, without admitting wrongdoing. Those events form part of the company’s history, but they are distinct from the operating and liquidity pressures that led to the 2025 bankruptcy filing.
What did Nikola make, and what happened to its trucks?
Nikola built Class 8 battery-electric and hydrogen fuel-cell trucks, and operated HYLA, its hydrogen supply and fueling brand. That meant the company’s financial failure raised questions not only about vehicle sales but also about fuel, service, parts and support for fleets already using its trucks.
At the time of filing, Nikola said it intended to seek court approval for limited service, support and fueling for vehicles already on the road through the end of March 2025. That was a proposed, time-limited arrangement—not a guarantee of ongoing support or a statement that every customer received all planned services. The company also warned that continued support would require additional funding.
The case did not end in a normal operating reorganization. Epiq’s case materials record that the Delaware Bankruptcy Court confirmed a modified second amended Chapter 11 plan of liquidation on September 12, 2025. Nikola’s 2024 Form 10-K says substantially all of its assets were sold and business operations ceased. The available facts therefore do not support assuming Nikola remains an operating truckmaker or that its former service and fueling network continues as before.

How much did Nikola owe when it filed?
Reuters reported that the bankruptcy filing estimated Nikola’s assets at $500 million to $1 billion and its liabilities at $1 billion to $10 billion. Those are broad ranges in the court filing, not audited final values or a statement of what creditors ultimately received. The gap between the ranges signals substantial financial distress, but it cannot be used on its own to calculate a recovery for any particular claim.

Chapter 11 is a court-supervised process in which a company can seek authority to sell assets, manage claims and, in some cases, continue operating while a restructuring or sale is pursued. Nikola used the process to seek a sale and proposed limited support for existing vehicles. Its eventual liquidation plan marked a shift away from a conventional turnaround in which the company would resume business under a reorganized structure.

- Truck owners and fleet operators: The announced support period was limited and subject to court approval. With operations later ceasing, owners should not assume that Nikola itself remains available for warranty work, parts, hydrogen or routine service. The cited case information does not establish which independent providers, if any, took over particular support obligations.
- Creditors: Claims are handled through the bankruptcy estate and the confirmed liquidation plan. The filing’s asset and liability estimates do not reveal an individual creditor’s priority, allowed claim amount or distribution.
- Shareholders: A Chapter 11 filing does not specify what existing shareholders will recover. In a liquidation, recoveries depend on the value available after the estate’s obligations and claim priorities are addressed. The cited materials do not establish a final amount, if any, for Nikola shareholders.
Confirmation of the liquidation plan is a significant case milestone, but it is not proof that every claim has been paid or that every estate matter is closed. Later docket activity or appeals can affect procedural details.
