The right choice depends on the work you want, your existing skills, and whether you need cloud fundamentals or a role-specific credential. Microsoft organizes certifications into Fundamentals, Associate, Expert, and Specialty levels, and says its exams reflect job responsibilities.
A definitive, current “top 15” ranking would be misleading without checking every credential’s live Microsoft Learn page: titles, exam codes, objectives, and retirement dates change. The three credentials below are the options established by the current source material, followed by a process for selecting any additional certification safely.
Verified Azure certifications and who they fit
| Certification | Best fit | Level and scope | Exam details established here | Renewal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Azure Fundamentals | Beginners and professionals building cloud literacy | Fundamentals; cloud concepts, core Azure services, management and governance | AZ-900; Microsoft reports a 45-minute assessment | Check the current credential page |
| Azure Administrator Associate | People administering Azure environments | Associate; implementing, managing, securing and monitoring Azure | AZ-104; Microsoft reports a 100-minute assessment covering identity and governance, storage, compute, virtual networking, and monitoring and maintenance | Microsoft reports a 12-month renewal frequency for this credential |
| Azure Data Fundamentals | People who need foundational data and Azure data-service knowledge | Fundamentals; core data concepts and Azure data services | Current exam timing was not stated | Check the current credential page |
Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900)
Microsoft calls Azure Fundamentals “a common starting point in a journey towards a career in Azure.” It is appropriate if you are new to cloud computing or need a structured overview before choosing a technical specialization. It is not presented as a mandatory prerequisite for every later certification.
Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104)
This is the most directly hands-on option among the verified examples. Microsoft describes administrators as part of a larger team implementing an organization’s cloud infrastructure. You should be comfortable with operating systems, networking, servers, virtualization and Azure tools including PowerShell, Azure CLI, the Azure portal, and ARM templates or Bicep.

#1 Best Overall
Azure Data Fundamentals
This credential introduces data concepts and Azure data services. Microsoft explicitly says it is not a prerequisite for Azure Database Administrator Associate or Azure Data Engineer Associate. Take it when you need foundational data knowledge, not simply because you plan to pursue a role-based data credential.
How to choose the right Azure certification
- Name the job you want. Administration, data, security, development, architecture and other paths require different assessed skills. Start with the role description rather than a prestige ladder.
- Compare your baseline with the exam’s study guide. Fundamentals credentials suit newcomers; an Associate credential such as AZ-104 assumes practical infrastructure knowledge.
- Check the live Microsoft page. Confirm the credential title, level, exam code, objectives, availability and renewal terms immediately before you enroll.
- Choose preparation that matches the assessment. Microsoft lists study guides, exam-preparation videos, online or instructor-led training, practice assessments and an exam sandbox.
- Register with a personal account. Microsoft advises this on the AZ-900 and AZ-104 pages because organizational exam records may become unrecoverable if you leave that organization.
Do you need Azure Fundamentals first?
No universal prerequisite is established. Azure Fundamentals is a sensible starting point for cloud beginners, but Microsoft explicitly states that Azure Data Fundamentals is not required before Azure Database Administrator Associate or Azure Data Engineer Associate. For any other path, follow the current certification page’s recommended experience and skills rather than assuming a sequence.

Certification levels are not a career ranking
Fundamentals, Associate, Expert and Specialty describe scope and expected capability; they do not guarantee a promotion or make one credential best for every role. An exam-based certification is also different from a lab-based Applied Skills credential, which Microsoft lists separately.
Microsoft’s Credentials overview presents two broader, non-Azure-specific findings: Pearson VUE’s 2025 Value of IT Certification Candidate Report says 63% of professionals received or expected a job promotion after earning a certification, while an IDC InfoBrief sponsored by Microsoft in June 2024 reports that 76% of employees showed increased ability to innovate and enhance processes after certification. These figures are not Azure-specific causal estimates or promises of employment.

Microsoft says role-based and specialty certifications expire after one year and describes free online renewal assessments. Verify the individual credential page because renewal rules can differ as programs change. The AZ-900 and AZ-104 assessment times above apply only to those exams; do not generalize them to every Azure test.

What a responsible “top 15” checklist looks like
Before adding any other Azure credential to a personal shortlist, record these fields from its current Microsoft Learn page:
Rank #4
- Exact title and current status
- Exam code and whether the exam is active
- Target role and assessed tasks
- Level and recommended experience
- Exam duration and delivery details
- Renewal interval and available renewal assessment
- Preparation resources and practice options
This verification step matters more than an internet ranking. A credential that has been renamed, retired or refocused can otherwise send you toward obsolete study material.

The Bottom Line
Start with Azure Fundamentals if you need cloud basics; choose Azure Administrator Associate for hands-on Azure infrastructure; choose Azure Data Fundamentals for foundational data knowledge. For any supposed “top 15” list, validate every item on its live Microsoft Learn page before paying for an exam or buying study material.
